In the Spring of 2009 on the island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean, the greyhound racing stadium was closed down, and 175 greyhounds were let loose to survive as best they could. Galgo News ran the story. This is a video of their story and their happy endings in forever homes.

Pregnant galga, abandoned on the streets of Cordoba – please help
One of the things which really sickens me and also makes me exceedingly angry is the abandonment of animals – everywhere. I receive many emails containing appeals for help for abandoned animals, or mass cullings of stray dogs or wild mustangs. The reason there are so many unwanted animals is because of MAN, as in human. If there were not people like breeders of animals, dog and horse shows, circuses – to name just a few – there would not be the need for refuges and rescue associations.
This is yet another example of irresponsibility and lack of care – a galga abandoned on the streets of Cordoba, prey to any dog which scents her when she comes into season. The result, she is still wandering the streets of Cordoba, heavily pregnant and about to give birth to yet more unwanted dogs.

Latest news on Podenca Mary in Malaga – looking for a forever home
This is the latest picture of Podenca Mary, rescued from a petrol station by Charl. Here she is, sharing a chair with Charl’s daughter and younger son. Apparently Mary would not leave the chair without them! If you can donate towards the cost of the veterinary fees, or offer Mary a forever home, contact Charl, 112 Carlota Galgos. Mary does not have a UK passport.

Update on Podenca Mary and introducing Galga Dana
Mary has now been bathed, wormed, flea treatment, ticks removed, and taken to the vet – age estimated just 5-6 months old. See how tiny she is, sitting next to the laundry basket! Not surprisingly, she has no microchip. She has tested negative for leishmania, just waiting for the results for ehrlichia and filaria. These should be back in a couple of days, and then she will be vaccinated etc. Once this has been done, she will go to the kennels with Dana.

Mary, a young podenca rescued in Alhaurin, Spain, desperately needing help
A picture of sheer unadulterated terror in the eyes of this little dog! Charl del Rio found her at a petrol station, lost, terrified, hungry. She managed to catch her, called her Mary as she is like a little lamb, and now tells the story.
‘I went to visit the galgo Charlie after his castration, and on the way home I stopped at the petrol station in Alhaurin, where I found this little lost soul, a baby podenco which looks like a little fox, COVERED in pinchy thorns… it was late, I got to the petrol station and thought ill put petrol in the car. I stopped walking and she came up behind me. At a distance I thought she was older than she was, but I then could see she was just a baby.

Podenca Andaluz Bebe – off on an adventure in rural France!
Yet another story about a podenco! This time it is about mine, little Bebe, my Podenca Andaluz, rescued injured from a Seville motorway 2 1/2 years ago. My vet operated on her injured leg, and now Bebe is the fastest Pod on 4 legs!! I haven’t been able to train her to come to me when she is outside of the house, the vet thought she was about 5 or 6 when rescued, so probably too old to train. So when we walk the dogs, Bebe is on a harness and long lead, and then on a long tether on a long line when in the courtyard with the other dogs. Our courtyard is enclosed for galgos and Podenco Canarios and Ibicencos, but not the miniatures. We have to leave one or two small escape routes for our cat, in case she ventures into the courtyard when the dogs are loose.

Pro-Galgo urgently need help – please donate
Does this break your heart or what? To see a beautiful affectionate loving galgo in this state! Luckily Pro-Galgo has come to his rescue. You can read his story and that of another galgo, plus a little Yorkie (whose owner died) on their website.
Pro-Galgo still has 5 of the 28 Jerez galgos in kennels, which costs, and now they have vet bills for these three dogs. They are out of funds. Please, if you can contribute towards any of these costs – 700 euros will cover the fees for microchipping, vaccination, castration – and a dental job on the Yorkie – donate through their website. However small the amount – even £10 or $10 or 10 euros – it will be greatly appreciated.

Podenca Minerva in Seville looking for a forever home
And another gorgeous podenca rescued last month and looking for her forever home.
Minerva in Roman mythology, among other things, goddess of wisdom. And our podenquita proved to be very wise when she decided that she should continue to the door of the house of Angel and his girlfriend. Somehow she knew they would take her.
Our kids spent hours and hours ridding her of a lot of parasites, they gave her a bath and after a hearty meal, Minerva, as a baby calm and confident, fell asleep. On waking we have found a sweetheart.

Podenca Maria, injured and surviving on the streets of Seville
This little podenca is Maria, who was abandoned and has lived most of her life on the streets of a village near to Seville, too terrified to be caught. Searching for food amongst rubbish, dodging vehicles on the road, bearing puppies.
She was finally captured last month by an association ARCA, along with her 3 puppies. She has been hit twice by vehicles and has suffered a compression of the spinal cord which has resulted in a loss of feeling, and poor movement.
