This is the latest news about Kafir, the poor galgo who tried to chew off his leg.
Cristina writes:
‘I just want to tell you that Kafir was operated last Friday 8th January and the operation was a total success. The rest of his hind leg has been amputed and it was a wonderful job of our spanish vet, who sadly is already used to these kind of operations.
Poor Kafir had a bad waking up from anesthesy as he was crying very much and felt totally confused. He stayed in the clinic during the night and I went there to bring him his favourite rice with chicken and carrots for his dinner.
New pictures of CIUDAD ANIMAL (Pedro Munoz refuge), taken on 5 of January, today it is snowing there and the temperature is very low.
It is very necessary and urgent to get the pipeline constructed to take water and snow, and put a new, concrete floor for the dogs. The estimate for all the work is over 10,000 euros. Please send donations direct to

Dogs greeting Loli – she works so hard for them. Please, don’t forget them, they urgently need funds to do this work.
Just wanted to share this lovely verse with you, sent by Pat Getz
Grow Old with Dogs
As I am growing old…….I wear soft gray sweatshirts and a bandana over my hair, and I spend my social security checks on wine and my dogs.
I sit in my house on my sofa and listen to my dogs’ breathing. I will sneak out in the middle of a cool night and take my dogs for a walk, if my old bones will allow.
This is an appeal with a difference. We’re asking for people to sponsor two galgos. Their story first appeared on Galgo News in June 2008 and then again in October 2008.
They have been in foster with my friend Joanna Simm in south eastern France, and as they are getting on and have been with her so long, it is possible no one will now want to adopt them.
They both need medication, especially Quijote (also known as Luis). Could you sponsor the medication? This is what Joanna says.
This is the press release from Greyhound Action.
DON’T ALLOW GREYHOUND RACING IN THE PHILIPPINES!
Worldwide action needed – now!
According to a recent article in the Manila Bulletin the Philippines House of Representatives has agreed to legalise commercial greyhound racing, but the Bill still has to go to the Senate for a final decision.
Could you chew off your own arm or leg? Kafir tried to. Cristina tells his story.
KAFIR ( ex Blacki on internet forums ), male of 70 cm, 3-4 years and is that special galgo of endless sweetness.
Kafir comes from Mérida ( Badajoz ). He was abandoned, always looking for food and one day he appeared with a terrible wire around his hind leg. It was so tight that it created a very bad and deep wound up to the point that the leg began to gangrenate.
Kafir was in so much pain and was suffering so much that he himself began to bite himself up to the point that people saw him, saw that the leg was hanging only by a tendon.
I have removed the post about their rescue as there seems to be a great deal of confusion about who is getting the dogs out. As I live in France, I can only report the news which is sent to me and have no reason to doubt the authenticity of the source from which I was given the information.
So long as someone gets the dogs out!!!
Valarie Woolf says ‘Here is the webpage with the Philippine Senators. Please, everyone—send emails to them denouncing the approval of the bill that would permit dog racing in the Philippines.’

Greyhound Action says ‘We’re now waiting to hear from the Phillipines Animal Welfare Society with a list of e-mail addresses of senators for people to contact.’
