• From Heaven to Hell – The Story of the Galgo Espagnol

I’ve been involved in the plight of the Spanish galgo and podenco for 18 years, publicising their plight long before the advent of facebook in 2011.  Not many people outside of Spain knew of the suffering of these wonderful hounds at the hands of the Spanish galguero and podenquero.  Galgos hung from olive trees known as The Piano (this is a rarety now), podencos kept hidden in valleys locked away, let out on hunting days, often starving and dehydrated. (more…)

  • 14 more Spanish hunting dogs starved and abandoned.

Confiscation of the 14 dogs that form part of the investigated rehala.

Officers found several malnourished animals on the property, with no water, food or any type of identification. More than a dozen were rescued in a state of extreme weakness. The autopsy will allow to check if they were used for hunting activities

The dogs remained locked up in disused farm trailers, with no access to water, food or veterinary care. The deceased specimens were not wearing a microchip or ID collar, which hampered their traceability, while the survivors showed clear symptoms of abandonment and disease, according to the preliminary veterinary report.

  • Camping & Caravanning with Greyhounds and Sighthounds 2025

Great Greyhound Walk Croft Farm Water Park 2025 – 327 dogs walked

5 years ago Dave Landy bought a caravan.  He also had a greyhound and wondered what it would be like to take the greyhound – along with his family – on a caravan holiday.  He then asked the question on facebook if there were other people who camped with their greyhounds.  This grew until now there are over 7,000 members of the CACWGAS fb group.

Over the last weekend in September 2025 Dave and his team organised the 5th get together to coincide with the Greyt Greyhound Walk where over 350 sighthounds walked for charity.  We met at Croft Farm Water Park near Tewkesbury where the caravan park, lodges and chalets were filled with hoomans and hounds, nearly 200 hoomans and nearly double that of sighthounds – and a few of their companions.

There were retail shops, quizzes and auctions and live music in the huge marquee, together with a fun dog show where Rosie won ‘Best Decorated Lead’.  (I’m still getting the hang of using this new blog system and have yet to learn to add an image!)

Through all the fundraising over the weekend, over £10,000 was raised (including a couple of large donations) to share between 2 greyhound charities.

Croft Farm Water Park is now booked for September 2026 and 2027, with pitches and lodges allocated on a first come first served basis.

  • When is a dog considered a Senior?

Interesting article discussing this question.  Most of our galgos have lived to 14 years – apart from those who developed cancer, such as Sahara, Polar, Bracken and recently blind Podenco Bo. Little Podenca Bebe at 7 1/2 kg lived to 17 years.  So they all had a good innings. Currently we have Podenca Andaluz Rosie at 16 1/2 kg who is 11 and will hopefully see another 4 years of love and comfort in our home.

  • Learning a new system

Apologies for the lack of colourful pix on Galgo News but we have had to change to a new system and I am still getting the hang of using it.

  • New home for Galgo News

WE have had to move the Galgo News website to a new internet home, so that’s why we have been offline the past few days.

The site is still very much a work in progress, but we are slowly putting the pieces back together and normal service will be resumed soon.

As ever, thank you for your support over the years.
