Further to the article on treatment for Leishmania, Portugal Dog Rescue (Estrela and the galgos) share their experience of different treatments for one of their galgas, Joy. Always good to be able to share information.
Glucantime is a much cheaper alternative to Allopurinol for leishmania, created for humans; however Glucantime is very harsh on the liver and kidneys, and Joy’s kidneys are not perfect due to leishmaniosis, so using glucantime would mean weekly renal function tests and is less effective, meaning the treatment would cost roughly the same with less chances of a good result.
Also be aware and please tell your bloggers that the leishmania vaccine is quite pricey and only 70% effective, with the added problem that the vaccine itself can lead to full-blown leishmaniosis. I know several cases here in Portugal of perfectly healthy pet dogs that were given the vaccine and ended up being infected with the visceral strain, the worst and most deadly one.
We managed to find an online Spanish store that sells Milteforan for cheaper treatment (Joy needs 60ml for her size), so we’re only €46 short now, we’ll start treatment as soon as we can…
