Update on Toledo hunter who hung his galgos – Baas Galgo contines the fight

Here is the English translation of the statement of the hunter in Toledo accused of hanging and disposing of 3 galgos. Baas Galgo took out a denuncia and are pursuing the man through the court system. Fingers crossed that they win.

‘Madrid 25th of April; in the Torrijos Court (Toledo), this is the statement of the person who has been accused of hanging his galgos. He acknowledged in his Guard Civil´s statement that the two galgos with microchips belonged to him. Likewise, he acknowledged that he hung the galgos in his house and after he buried them in the place where they were found.

The accused stated that he did it because the galgos were very old and they were not suitable for hunting any more. He said that they did not run fast enough and they did not have the abilities needed for hunting. They were 22 months and 5 years old. He also stated that he did not intend to contact neither an animal defence association nor a veterinary in order to leave the galgos with them. The accused was vice chairman of a galgo hunting association in Fuensalida for four years. Currently he continues being a member of this association.

The judge agreed to take proceedings against the accused. He will be accused of an animal abuse offence. The penalty could reach one year in jail for each galgo hung; besides he would not be able to carry out any profession or business relative to animals for a period of three years.

Baasgalgo Association, founded to fight against galgo abuse, and will represent the particular prosecution in this case. Besides the jail penalty, Baasgalgo will request compensation so that it will be able to be used to help mistreated animals. The lawyer Sergio Garcia-Valle, who is a specialist in this subject, will represent Baasgalgo in court.

Congratulations to Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo, and her team, for fighting this case. It would be wonderful to think that it might discourage other hunters from perpetrating such a crime. Sadly it could also encourage the sick bastards to dig out the microchips before killing and dumping the dogs.

We all hope the same, but you will know only too
well, living in Spain, just how much these bastard hunters and gitanos hidetheir
crueltyfrom the rest of Spain. I wish more people would register
denuncias, as Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo has said. You dont need a
microchip in a dog, you dont need to know who owns the dog, all you need is an
abandoned dog, then register a denuncia. If all the volunteers and
associations did this, then it would fight the claim by the hunters that we
fabricate all these stories of cruelty.
Thank you for caring, for all you do, and your
support for the galgos and podencos.
