Petition to sign – close down Mairena del Aljarafe killing station

Mairena 9 23 01 2011 210This is a petition currently running to close down Mairena killing station, because the dogs which end up in there are kept in horrendous dirty conditions, starved…etc. Here’s the link. The information required is

For me, there are two thoughts on this.

1. If the perrera is closed, where on earth will the hundreds and hundreds of abandoned and dumped dogs and cats go? Shelters and refuges are full to overflowing most of the year.

2. Would it not be better to demand that the municipal council ensures that conditions in the perrera reach acceptable standards for animal care ie. kennels/runs cleaned out twice a day at least, comfy bedding provided, dog croquettes in a big container so the dogs can eat as and when they want, clean water (in some perreras the water is a foul green!)

What do you think?

The question is, what are the alternatives?
Is there any information available on animal rescue initiatives in the area?
Maybe there is a good alternative and then it is reasonable to demand the closing of the perrera.
Or if other groups / refugees outside the town could take over the functions of this perrera.
But if not, then it should be a list with suggestions how to make the conditions better in this perrera.
The main dog pound in Budapest was no good place back more than 10 or 20 years ago. Then it started, I do not know how, but volunteers went and took photos of the dogs, they had a super inofficial website and now, on the very same webaddress you can see the new official website, with news, programs, photos and description of the dogs. That pond now gets as much help as it is possible, the vet cooperates with everyone who wants to help and they are totally well known and many people adopt directly from them.
It is still a dog pound but nevertheless, many dogs there really get their second chance.
It was a long way and a huge luck for the dogs there, that the vet was so open-minded for any kind of suggestions to help the animals.
Beryl I wrote an e-mail to you some weeks ago regarding a website my sister programmed and which could be made available for some organizations (or maybe even for a perrera) to advertise their dogs online and in various languages (they can pick the languages, the site translates the information automatically once you filled in the form about the dog in one of the languages). I do not know if you ever received that e-mail.

    Bonjour
I agree with you Tunde. I did get your email
about your sisters kind offer and forwarded it on to people to whom it could be
useful. Im sorry if no one has got back to you. I have saved your
email, as I will save your comment here, and circulate. For me, closing a
perrera does not solve any problem, it creates more problems. It is a fact
of life that there are far too many dogs bred – whether by dog breeders for
money or by people not neutering their dogs – and the abandoned souls have to be
collected and taken somewhere. It should be about improving conditions for
the animals in the perrera and, if there has to be euthanasia, then it is the
most humane method, not the cheapest as is the case usually – it can take a dog
up to 20 minutes to die when gassed. Between us, I am sure we can find
other people willing to take up this idea.
    Thanks for caring.

i agree they dont need shuting down they need educating on animal welfare it needs someone with a heart in this area to get the ball rolling for the sake of these beutiful dogs i cant understand why these animals have to suffer a horrid death dying in agony for 20 mins ant there a vet anywhere round that area who can convince the council to do this in the proper manner the injection where they just slip away peacefully its awful oh this is heart breaking poor souls if it ant bad enough in life for majority of them they go give them a horrid death on top

I suppose gasing several dogs together is simply CHEAPER than euthanize them one by one properly.
As well as I know, even in the USA killing with gas is a method of ending the lives of unwanted dogs in some pounds.
Especially because they kill a HUGE number of unwanted animals there.
I do not know how many dog pounds use this method in the USA. Surely not all but even if it would be only ONE it would be ONE TOO MUCH.
Very sad, when a pound can not do better.
    It is often simply GREED.

Greyhounds need homes, not more racing. We in MA in the US have successfully stopped racing in many states. Dogs should not be locked in cages only to be let out to race. That is what has happened here and it is worse in other countries. Stop the racing , at the same time appeal to people to adopt them (they are lovely dogs),and see if other countries will help. It doesn’t mean you can not work on making things better for the dogs but in the long run this is no life for them. We have greyhound rescues to help them get adopted. I don’t know where you all are from so I am not assuming you are from here.
As for euthanasia, they are not euthanized, they are killed. Euthanasia ends lives of those who are suffering and will not recover. These dogs are suffering from the way they are treated and that can be fixed. they just need homes and love.

Hi Kate I am originally from Hungary, lived for 14 years in Germany and live now in London, Ontario. There is a Greyhound rescue nearby (in Ingersoll), they bring the dogs from the US.
We have 2 Galgos, we adopted them when we lived in Europe.

    Bonjour
Thank you for your comment. The majority of
Galgos are used for hunting hares, rather than racing. The hunting season
in Spain runs from September to January. After that, the hunters dump
their dogs in their tens of thousands. So its not a case of stopping
racing, its banning hunting with greyhounds/galgos – Spain is the only European
country where this is allowed, although it is known to go on in the Indian
sub-continent too. The dogs do need loving homes – but the sheer scale of
the problem is that in the region of 50,000 galgos are disposed of in various
ways (you can read all about it on Galgo News) means that the majority of them
    are killed.

You are lucky to have two such lovely dogs. We are working at stopping racing her and I did not know they went to Canada although certainly it is not that far. I hope to have one myself someday. Thank you for giving them a home.

That is interesting Beryl and thank you for the information as I really did not know they are more for hunting. AsI am sure you know Spain does not have a very good recored when it domes to treating animals well. How sad that so many are killed. Imagine if that many people were killed-what an uproar there would be. It is indeed a huge problem and I hope that someday it is a non existent problem.
    Bon soir et merci. Kate
