The fourth and final part of Hounding Misery by Nano Calvo. As always, stunning photos and plenty of food for thought.

I found this chapter very disappointing, except where Calvo raises the ridiculous situation of rescues failing to work together to tackle the problem. His figures for atrocities/abandonment of other breeds misrepresent the facts: PER BREED, greyhounds suffer much more from neglect and cruelty than any other single breed. He suggests greyhound rescue is elitist, perhaps to some people, but for many others the greyhound is simply more fragile, more sensitive to abuse and less physiologically able to withstand neglect and harsh treatment. The majority of homeless dogs being pts in other countries are the overbred hard-to-home ‘status’ breeds such as bull terriers/staffies. And I think he grossly under-represents the scale of the horrors inflicted on the hunting dogs. To suggest so many abandonments arise from thefts is simply naive. My overall impression is that Calvo is one of these people who resent greyhound rescue because ‘it stops ‘proper’ dogs getting homes’, something I have heard a few times before. Sorry, but this article seems to lean very much towards the hunter/racer p.o.v, not middle-of-the-road.

Have you posted your comments above on his blog?I criticised that he talks of trainers when he actually means hunters…I agree with you on the above, but take the line that all publicity about the galgos is positive because in previous chapters hes talked about the problems for associations. One thing he doesnt seem aware of is the black trafiking where dogs disappear abroad – for eg.how to galgos get to Pakistan to be used for hunting?!Thats something Im trying to make time to investigate.

I will do, need time to gather my thoughts as I was really quite angry about some of the points, eg that rescues might not be too transparent about the cash they raise, this might be very off-putting to someone considering a donation. You only need to look at some of the images and you have some idea of the vet bills alone that rescues pay, and everyone I know who is involved in rescue actually spends more of their own cash than they can really afford, to help the dogs (all breeds), such is their dedication. We are all paying to clean up these hunting B******ds mess, and I know you know this, but just need to vent a bit. I agree publicity is helpful, but I hate the way some people try to deny and diminish the very real and tragic problems.
