Please today, think of brave Vulcano who will suffer unspeakable torture, pain, terror at the hands of screaming bloodlusters driving spears into his body from horseback – in the Toro de la Vega – despite tens of thousands of Spaniards marching to protest about it. One protester entered the bullring at Merida. See photos below of buses in Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Albacete to mention just 4 cities calling on people to go to Madrid on 14 September to join the march. Organised by PACMA.
I know this isn’t about galgos or podencos but I feel this illustrates the strength of feeling amongst so many Spanish people who are against animal cruelty, especially the younger generations. Now we need this strength of feeling to be show in support of stopping the annual galgo and podenco holocaust!

I have been told he died at 11.15 Spanish time this morning. At least now his torment and pain is over…
For shame! My thoughts are with Vulcano and all the other animals who have suffered in these blood ‘fiestas’. I am so sorry that Vulcano couldn’t be saved. What is wrong with the people in power that they can’t see the strength of feeling from their own countrymen and women? I don’t want to hear about ignorance in this respect. The people in power are no doubt educated and affluent and can put a stop to this if they wanted to. Brave person to go into the ring and good on the Spanish peopple who protested in their thousands. Torturing animals for fun in the name of ‘entertainment’ is wrong.
The mayor said this has been happening for over 500 years we will carry on it is part of out heritge
Christans use to be burned at the stake that was tradion we dont do that any more so why carry one with this blood lust for killling
Prosters were stoned hit with sticks and one man hurt badly when taking photos
One and only good thing that happend there to day was one man was gored I do hope it hurt and he suffers for a long time R.I.P Vulcano
Thank you for your update, Toni. I’d like to go in with tear gas on all of them…or stun guns…you know me, I’d soon be in jail…can’t believe his excuse!
makes me sick
aww vulcano so sorry we couldnt help you they didnt listen to us rip volcano big thanks to the man who entered the ring all in vain but you stood up for volcano in your own way my hat comes off to you who ever you are wish more people would have joined him
In no way do I condone bull fighting. It is mental and physical torture of a terrified animal. And the people who take part deserve to suffer the same fate…..but I can’t help but feel that some people are hypocritical..I wonder how many of the protestors have eaten steak or other animal product since Vulcano died…..sorry but its true….he would have died in terror in the slaughterhouse anyway
I think most of us can be accused of being hypocritical in one way or another. Most people wear leather shoes and most of our dogs eat meat or meat derivative products. I have a close friend who is vegan who says it is nigh on impossible to guarantee that all the products we use are cruelty free, despite best efforts. Most people who eat meat hope that the animal has been killed humanely. Having read some of the recent reports from Hillside about abbatoirs, it seems clear that this is often not the case. I think the difference here is the sheer blood lust, baying crowds and people taking great enjoyment in the prolonged suffering and torture of an animal. This is seen as great visual entertainment and I wonder what example this sets to children, that it is quite acceptable to abuse and torture animals? I am glad that people protested in their thousands, this type of medieval nonsense should be stopped. At least there appears to be change happening. 15,000 people stepping up and protesting against animal torture. Surely this has to be a good thing?
I totally agree with you Kathryn and I am no doubt a hypocrite myself although I do not wear leather nor eat meat, but I feed it to my dogs. I respect and and applaud the protesters but still can not understand how they can feel so strongly against animal suffering one minute then go and eat meat from a similar animal the next, even though it died in a slaughterhouse rather than in a ring. Believe me, animals suffer immensely in the slaughterhouse process in England and I would imagine it to be much worse for them in Spain. However this is not the point here, this thread is for poor Vucano . I hope he is at peace now and I hope the people who took pleasure in his suffering get their just desserts one day
Jane, I think you have a valid point. I have read the recent reports from Hillside Animal Sanctaury about the living conditions of animals on certain farms and also the conditions in the abbatoirs. It made for grim reading. There was also an article about a farm that was RSPCA freedom food accredited where the pigs were lying in slurry unable to move and desperately thirsty, it was awful. What I try and do is get all of my products ie eggs, milk from a local farm where the welfare standards are high. There are no guarantees here though either, I know that. I wish that there could be a complete overhaul of the farming industry and that the welfare of animals was a priority. It is all about profit though unfortunately.
I hope Vulcano is at peace too. It is time for reform and to stamp out these blood fiestas.
