I have had the date of 9th October 2013 on my calendar for months, ever since Sandra Baas of Asociacion Baase Galgo announced that this would be the date of the court case against the galguero in Toledo who hung his galgos. ‘Oh, I didn’t know I shouldn’t’ he claimed!!
‘October 9th, a court trial took place today at Juzgado n1 de lo Penal de Toledo for the man who murdered his two galgos by hanging. Two years ago, the corpses of the two young dogs (one was 22 months old, the other was 5 years old) were found in the Fuensalida, Toledo location. The dogs had been hung and killed.
One of the dogs had a microchip which identified their owner, who confessed to the massacre and told the judge that he was not aware that hanging his dogs was considered illegal and that he did so because they were deemed “ineffective” since they were not successful hunting dogs.
Given these facts, the court agreed to open the case in 2011. The Baas Galgo association personally has requested together with Sergio Garci-Valle, a lawyer who specializes in these types of cases, that the perpetrator receive at least 1 year of prison per dog as well as pay of over 6000 euros in fines.
It is felt that this is the case which will really make a difference and makes a statement to others about the plight of these dogs and the overall fight for animal rights.
The outcome is awaited with bated breath…

beryl no matter how long the sentence or how big the fine its to late for these 2 babies as it is for all the poor souls that suffer horrid deaths if these laws had of been passed more serious years ago for these sentient beings maybe them 2 babies would have been here today along with all others befor them and after them well we will see what the decision is
I hope this sadist gets the maximal sentence and the maximal possible fine! That would be a message to other similar perverts.
Honestly, I am happy that I am not a Spanish individual, it must be really bad when you get abroad and everybody associates your country with animal cruelty.
Because that is the case right now.
I can imagine that each normal Spaniard has had enough of such perpetrators. They are the shame of Spain, really.
The sentence this sadist gets will not help those two dogs, it is too late for them.
But it might help other ones that would be otherwise killed in the same way this year.
I really hope he’ll get the maximum sentence, although I think the fine of 6000€ is too low. They should ask for 20.000€, then the court might agree to about 10.000-12.000€…
And also a higher conviction of perhaps 2 years prison…
It is absolutely ridiculous, that he claimed he didn’t know this was illegal ! Hope the judges won’t believe him and furthermore that they are pro-animal protection, and not pro-galgueros….you never know…
Please keep us updated on this trial 😊
This barbarian may not have realised that hanging his dogs was illegal but he must have known it is cruel and would cause immeasurable pain and distress!!! I think he should be deemed “ineffective” as a human being and should be given a little taste of his own medicine! What right do any of us have to deem the life of an animal is any less valuable than that of a human? If he’d hung a person he’d be looking at life in prison.
Agree, Tunde, so many millions of lovely Spanish people who must hate the image the animal cruelty gives their country, including of course against those Brits who leave Spain abandoning their dogs and cats.. Of course, theres animal cruelty everywhere, but in Spain it is much worse because of all the traditions like bull fighting, fire bulls, horse wrestling to name but three, not just to the dogs and cats.

Im still waiting for an update as to the outcome of the court case. Hopefully the judge was not a galguero or the man would get off!
Update now posted separately.
