Mairena – Brigitte Bardot takes up the cause

It’s got the email address for the president of the Junta of Andalucia, the emails and addresses for the Spanish embassy in Paris and the Spain’s permanent representaton at the European Council. Might be a good one to pass along to your readers. The Mairena video is on a lot of sites… it might be the one that will make things move, I hope.

There’s also this petition on Mairena:

This is the latest news posted on Facebook – supposedly Canal Sur tv last night said the dogs had been taken out. I’m still waiting for complete confirmation of this. Prodeanse of Seville have taken a few and I will be posting about this in due course.

Galgosan Leentvaar 21 January 10:19
Almost all dogs are out now. No money was payed. But normally the dogs are chipped and vaccinated . Now they are not. A lot off them are sick and week. Only 20 big dogs left and they are going to picked up today by Peter if all goes well.

Further news from a Spanish contact.
From what I’ve read the healthy dogs were taken yesterday by residents. A lot of them have been adopted & some have been taken in by foster parents. The dogs were given out for free with a signed affidavit. There are still the one that were sick which were not let out. They will go back for those today but there are about 17 I believe that have no where to go & in need of placement. The meeting I believe is a protest with the signed petition for them to permanently shut down the place.
Here’s the info on the meeting: on Thursday 23 of January 2014, at 20:00 at the municipal theatre of atarazana en la localidad in bormujos. It’s an extraordinary meeting and the more people that can go the better. They are trying to put an end to the horror of these shelters. I cannot attend because I am too far. But I can spread the news in hopes of support. Hope this helps

Beryl, please can you keep us updated re any info you get that comes out of the meeting on 23rd Jan. I think it is fantastic that the dogs are being rescued. I just think that there needs to be long term change, otherwise it will be back to square one in a few weeks with the shelter filled up with hundreds of dogs trying to survive in appalling conditions – sick, terrified, hungry, cold. I know that there has been a lot of publicity around this but when the publicity dies down I just hope that this won’t be forgotten. It is wonderful though that so many people have cared about these dogs.

I made some enquiries about the big white galgo with the black ears who is shown on the PACMA petition. I have been thinking about him ever since I watched the filmed footage. It seems likely that he didn’t make it, euthanised/died before the rescue took place. He reminded me of my Jake galgo. I have had a cry for him and thought about him. I know that he would not have been treated him gently, no one would have spoken softly to him, or laid a kind hand on him in his life. Poor boy, I am so sorry for him and all the other dogs who didn’t make it. So grateful to the rescues who have saved some of the Mairena dogs. I will be donating to Prodeanse tomorrow.

Jenny, it’s not 100% that he didn’t make it but highly likely. A lovely lady who works with a no kill shelter and rescue out in Spain made some enquiries for me. It seems that there was a photograph but I haven’t seen it and don’t want to. I also don’t know how long this dog or any of the other dogs were in Mairena. I just saw this boy on the film footage and then on the PACMA petition. He reminded me of Jake or what Jake might have become if he hadn’t been rescued and taken from the pound. I had a feeling that this boy hadn’t made it because he was clearly terribly ill and suffering, as were a lot of the dogs in there. I am so glad that many have been saved and I’m going to donate this morning.
