Kathryn and Jen, two readers of Galgo News, travelled across the Pennines from Yorkshire to Manchester on 26th January to take part in the above demonstration. Kathryn reports.
‘I went to the event, meeting up with Jen and we went together. It was really great. About 350 people turned up at least but may have been more. The Hilton was surrounded! There were lots of people with bannners, memorials, wreaths and loud hailers.
I think the Hilton were shocked – and so were the GBGB guests – at the attendance and the chanting etc. We also got loads of cars honking support. One of the good bits was when an ambulance went past and put on a special siren for us and shouted their support!
It was brilliant to be there and such a fantastic turn out. Don’t think GBGB expected it at all!
Jen had some leaflets. She also gave some to other people to hand out. She was also talking to lots of people about the galgos. I hadn’t been to a protest before so wasn’t sure what I could and couldn’t do (although I did end up at the front shouting really loudly!) If there is a protest again I will take leaflets about the galgos and hand them out, although I was talking to lots of people about the galgos. I will be fully prepared next time!
Also, just to say that there were some Italian protestors (Pet Levrieri I think) there too so it was an international occasion!’

Well done, you two. Did any other GN readers manage to get there? Bit of a long way for me to go from France!

oh it was electrick gbgb was shocked i think at the amount of people but there was a sence of upsetment with me just drifting in to thought on and off thinking of all the inocent little souls that didnt make it in time gone by for one idiotic reason or another all for the sake of vets bills shame on you rip all you babies we are the voice for the voiceless
Indeed it was Jen and yes GBGB were definitely shocked by the turnout. I have read that it was the biggest UK turnout for the greyhounds EVER! Also, the only person to get a police warning was a greyhound trainer (no surprise there). If anyone is thinking of going, perhaps next year, it was a great demo, peaceful, lots of camaraderie and well worth it to give a voice to the millions of greyhounds who have died for being “too slow to entertain” as the memorial stated. There were hundreds of lilies donated by people in remembrance of the greyhounds who have lost their lives. I will definitely be going to the next demo and hope that there is an even bigger turn out next time.
at that event we was at kathryn the a poxy trainer got a warning do you know what for i know a couple of them at different times went over to the police i would like to go down to belle view to support shut down belle view team that bloke we was talking to on sat but then i think well the greyhounds will be the other side of the building could i stay my own side
I don’t know what he got a warning for. There was a kerfuffle when we were there, when a trainer walked through the crowd to deliberately cause aggro, don’t know if it was him. Yes I saw a good few of them go over to the police, all of our noise must have been spoiling their champagne dinner while their dogs lay freezing in their kennels, what a shame eh?! Anyway, the police wouldn’t do anything, we were noisy but it was peaceful. The policeman even wished us all good luck! Yes, the man with the loud hailer was part of the ‘Shut Down Belle View’ group. I would like to go to Belle Vue too Jen but would be difficult seeing all those people going to bet and not giving a stuff about the greys. “Greyhounds suffer for your quick flutter!” Remember that chant?!
oh ye i remember it all kathryn you know the only way this is going to stop is the ban on breeding of the greyhounds its the one and only way that these poor souls are going to stop suffering same with the galogs and podencos in fact all breeds round the globe
Who is going to ban the breeding of the greyhounds? Which ‘caring’ governing body is going to do that? Whilst ever there is a demand for greyhound racing and money to be made, a successful gambling industry and a government to cream off the taxes then no one is going to ban the breeding of greyhounds. It will go on unchecked and the abuse will continue. Then they start to ship them abroad to make even more money.
well we could start with our own we need a charity or a campagin party here to get one going do on the care 2 site and see where it gets us but all the charities here must stick together and sign and as many as the animal loving people as pos when i get time i will contact caged see if they want to start one going i just got a lot on at the min with one thing and another but will get round to it
i have just contacted peta re the start of a petition on baning the breeding of galgos podencos and greyhounds they have apetition going at the ninute to ban the breeding of horses in america i cant sign its just us citizens at the minute so thought an opotunity to email them now i have donated a little though to go towards the work involved with the horse slaughter petition and also donated to hill side animal rescue today they are taking in animals from a rescue the poor owner was evicted yesterday dont know the full story as yet find out more when they can i know the owner was in a right state yesterday i can imagine
I read about Hillside Jen. They are saving animals from a rescue which has been evicted called ‘Rainbow Arc’. Hillside are brilliant and rescue so many animals in need. I will be donating.
