Galgo Tico in Seville – beating the galguero who abandoned him to die

Tico Sandra 170 8 2014Regular readers will remember the story of Tico, the galgo badly injured and left for dead in a ditch in Seville Province. Luckily he was found and taken to the vet where the incredible team, together with dedicated round-the-clock care from Sandra Campos Cuevas, brought him back to life and put his poor injured body back together. Over the months it was thought he would never walk, never be without nappies because he was incontinent…Spanish vets more than any others work tirelessly to save these dogs…where certainly in the UK and here in France they would be pts.

I’ve just watched THE most amazing video – sadly only on facebook so I can’t share it with you – of Tico, no nappies, running and playing with two canine friends. Simply incredible. Sandra reports Tico is very happy. The bad news is that once again he has urine infection. It appears that the use of diapers, this problem will always end up appearing. So he needs some antibiotics again. This time at least, it has been 12 days without bleeding. It’s nothing serious … I think it’s an everyday thing for us.
Here’s a photo of Sandra with Tico. And I stick 2 fingers up at you, bastard galguero, who couldn’t take care of your hound and prevent his suffering!

Wonderful news! You are right Beryl about the vets in Spain. Here’s another wonderful story about a little Podenca left for dead, whom the Spanish vets saved. It’s a real miracle!

I know that the same dog in the same state would have been euthanized without hesitation here in Québec.

For Tico phage therapy would be probably helpful, but I do not know where it is avaible in your area.
Phage therapy is a great alternative to antibiotics and it is without side effects.

Here are some companies, that could be asked if they have anything available for veterinary use

Otherwise the people must ask the Georgians about the availability of this kind of medicine. In Georgia phage therapy is in everyday use for humans, maybe for animals, too.
In Western Europe it is not yet approved for human use, unfortunately (probably because of the pharma lobby)
Here the list of diseases you can treat very well with the phage therapy:

Many Western European people with antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections fly to Georgia for treatment because in their home countries they get no help anymore.

Wonderful to read this.update on Tico. Proves that there are many caring animal lovers in Spain as well as those who treat them so cruelly. Many thanks to Sandra and the vet who put Tico back together. Nothing short of a miracle.

For urinary infections they do tend to prescribe fluoroquinolones, the antibiotics that wrecked me and continue to harm millions of people and animals. Their use usually makes the UTI return again and again. I know nothing of phage therapy (but will read about it) but I think D-mannose can be used for dogs and it can be used at need or all the time. It’s a simnple sugar extracted from cranbberries or birch bark or various other plants. It can be ordered as D-mannose or there are various makes, such as Cranberry Plus. I can’t see any reason that it wouldn’t work for dogs, but of course one should verify. I’m pretty sure it’s used for mares.

Also, D-mannose works really, really fast!
