The law on keeping a dog chained up

Sweden can't tie up a dog HypeDojo 410In France where I live, many dogs spend their lives attached to the end of a 2metre chain. Many are border collies, used as ‘guard dogs’ in rural farms. As long as the dog has food, water and shelter, there is nothing one can do to help the dog. So this poster about it being illegal in Sweden to keep a dog like this made an impression on me. In Florida I read that you can’t tie any kind of animal up outside for you will get fined, even jailed if the situation is extreme and the animal will be taken away.

Every country should adopt this law, applicable to whatever animal including dancing bears (currently a petition against this in Pakistan) and elephants in the Far East used for tourists and ‘entertainment’.

Border Collie chained up – can’t get much more cruel than that, can you?
Dancing bears are now illegal in India and Pakistan, although there are still sadly some poor creatures forced to do this barbarity.
    Good for Sweden, excellent poster!

Here in Québec, it is legal to chain up a dog 365 days a year. There are petitions circulating from SPCAs, but to no avail so far… When you know that it can reach -30 C here in Winter, it’s totally inhumane that a dog be chained up in temperatures like that, but as long as he has “shelter” (which in most cases is a sad-looking wooden dog house, not even insulated), it’s legal. Even in the sweltering heat, he doesn’t have to have access to water at all times, as long as he gets water several times a day, it’s also legal. I can see only 3 “reasons” for a person to get a dog and chain him in the yard permanently: utter stupidity, crass ignorance or sadism. If it’s protection they want, they should get an alarm system…

Totally agree, Danielle, it’s the same here in France. The poor dog round the corner from us is never ever off the chain and it’s a small housing association semi, so probably not on the burglars’ list!
