  • End of hunting in Spain – galgos galore dumped everywhere…

Corley one leg not grown properly 400 9 2016Will the galgueros ever take responsibility for the terrible over-breeding, maltreatment and dumping of galgos. They really are from the dark ages…

2 more at Pepis Dog Refuge needing expensive vet treatment. Corley was dumped back in September with a deformed front leg possibly from an old injury which arthritis had attacked. It is possible that he will need an amputation, although other opinions are still being sought. In the meantime, the continued visits to the vets need funding.

Next is Kaiora, left tied at the gates who has now been diagnosed with coronary problems. More investigative work by the vets, more medical treatment on the cards, more vet fees!

And lastly Bradie, who Jane and Alan spotted being left tied to the gate with baler twine. He’s skinny and covered in wounds old and fresh, including one in his neck where the chip has been cut out. More vet fees for blood tests.

Please help Pepis, you know they rely solely on your donations and any fundraising you can do – car boot sales, coffee mornings, adverts on vet clinic news boards…donate paypal pepis.dogrefuge@yahoo.co.uk Also join the Pepis Teaming Group.

  • Mycotoxicosis – Mushroom, Mold, Yeast Poisoning in Dogs

Mouldy-bread 400I took this from a post on a facebook page – it is a very sad story but the information it contains is vitally important for all dog and cat owners

10/2/2017 Last evening our dogs Dexter & Georgie very suddenly fell gravely ill, sending our world into turmoil. We are keen for awareness to be raised about what happened to these fur-babies. Here is their story.

I would like to share with you our last horrific 24 hours in a hope that it may bring awareness to those of you who may also be unaware of a danger we have in our gardens that is potentially fatal to our beloved dogs.. (or cats, although they probably would have more sense)

  • Animal rescue on the front line in Murcia

Another rescue of galgos and podencos, one pregnant. Tina of Galgos del Sol tells the story.

’10 February 2017. We got a call to say that a galguero locally had been closed down and fined by Seprona and could we help take the dogs. This was an emotional case for us because its on our doorstep and we had been waiting for some time for this news. We had approached before to help to no avail and we had reached out to the authorities but nothing happened. There are a lot of ghosts around this place I don’t want to write about them but I’ve seen them and I’ve cried and I’ve waited this moment.

It’s not over yet tho, with one very ill galgo, the stress of the move threw him into extreme panic… Usually I stay calm but emotions & memories from the past here just took over and now I’m utterly drained instead of happy, the pressure got too much at the collapse of one of the galgos. (The vet put the muzzle on, as the galgo became extremely aggressive out of sheer terror).

  • BIG POLICE INTERVENTION – REFUGIO KIMBA 48 ANIMALS SAVED

Refugio Kimba 400Refugio Kimba is one of the longest established animal shelters in Spain. Here’s the latest news about their work.

FINALLY THE END OF THE HELL.

On Monday 6th of February, the SPAP Refugio Kimba collaborated with Seprona Police (Guardia Civil) by rescuing 48 animals abandoned in horrendous conditions in Chiclana, Cadiz. The images were terrible, I think we will not be able to forget that scene ever in our whole life.

The smell was awful, corpses’ smells, we could not avoid tears just thinking how many dog would have died in that hell. It was really difficult to breath and be in a good mood, but we had to be so strong be possible in order to save all the animals. Their cries and moans were breaking our souls.

  • Great news for galga Hypatia – beaten about the head and left for dead.

Hypatia bed 400 12 2 201712/2/2017. The volunteers report the latest news.

‘We haven’t been able to write until now, but we have news!! Hypatia has almost completed her medical treatment and is almost recovered, the only thing that still remains is some irritation in the larynx but little by little that will improve until you’re totally fine. For the rest, it is very good.

Today we’ve already taken her to her new family. See the photos for the amazing change in this beauty and she’s going to have a housemate too. A few weeks ago we didn’t imagine Hypatia would make such a good recovery and have this in store for her. Now she will always have someone to take care of her and love her unconditionally!’

  • Appache in Chella, Valencia – working on educating the locals

Isla on arrival crop 400 2 2017Maureen lives in a small village in the Valencia region called Chella. Here she writes about becoming yet another failed fosterer!

‘In the village is a fabulous group of Spanish ladies who I have joined to help with the protection of animals. The group is called Appache , it is a not for profit organisaion. They operate on a foster home basis and take any animal in need into their care. The organisation is only 2 years old and they are doing a fabulous job in an area where fund raising is challenging. They have welcomed me into the group and I was the first non Spanish person to join and have now recruited some of my mates too.

I was checking the Appache facebook page one afternoon when I saw a request for a foster home for a little black galga who had been abandoned. She was underweight by around 5 kilos and was sick with Leishmanosisi and ehrlichiosis.

  • Bravecto Flea & Tick treatment – warning

Last year I published a warning about the result of using Bravecto oral flea and tick treatment on dogs – there is a continuing campaign being run on a facebook page to have it banned. Many contributors have had dogs become seriously ill and in many cases after vets have recommended using it. Here is the link to the article I published about it on my other blog Galgo News.
