  • Old, black and male – no one wants a galgo?

Black galgo male 2 400Meet Negro – he’s very similar to my first greyhound, a stray with bony joints from where she had laid on hard concrete – same for Negro. His life hasn’t been easy. Many would have shot him. Instead they dumped him.

As a young man, he was exceptional and that would give him an “opportunity” that would weigh him like a slab.
Who knows what it was.. an injury, a disease, the years just…
So his chance to live was to be a stud. Slave Creator, like him.
    Like their females.
9 years locked in, doomed not to run, not enjoy the free air, be alone, to survive.

Now he’s free and his chains are new. He’s black. He’s old. He’s male. This is all against him. Who will want to adopt him.
A look that is empty of emotion but full of desires.
Is there a hope for this tired heart please?

  • Greyhound Rescue Holland – helping the Spanish galgos

Greyhound Rescue Holland-logo 400Greyhound Rescue Holland does tremendous work supporting Spanish shelters by rehoming rescued galgos in Holland and Belgium. They’ve just added 13 galgos from Galgos del Sur to their website, all looking for forever homes Here’s a message from GRH to everyone who supports them.

    THOUSAND THANKS TO OUR DONATORS

Greyhounds Rescue Holland plans to put the fate of the galgoes through the politics (including, together with Animals Today and Dutch Galgo Lobby), like last year’s protest march to the Spanish embassy and this year a visit to the European Parliament.

In addition, we support a number of Spanish shelters that save dogs (getting out of the street, floating from dodging stations, taking away from hunters), taking care of, providing the most necessary medical care, weighting and for adoption.

For the adoptions we are mediating and know a lot of dogs who have found a new home. Great how many people like to give these special dogs a nice home.

  • Galgos112 – rescuing a large galgo family in Jaen

Galgos 112 Mum 400 2Galgos 112 recently took on this new galgo family.

‘We asked for help to host the galgo puppies found in Jaén, now we tell you their story.

We got a request for help for a group of galgos who were abandoned almost a month in a village, were walking through the streets in the heatwave of more than 40º, no food or water, just what some neighbors gave them out of pity.

When volunteer Sara arrived in town, 3 Adult Galgos and four pups were found, the situation was bad, two of the pups were half dead and did not react, the other two were active but also in bad condition. They were easily caught two of the adults and the four Cubs, and without waiting any more they put them in the car and went to the veterinary clinic where they were treated with water, antidiarrheal and deworming for intestinal worms and Coccidia. They were also full of fleas. Even better, they began to eat.

  • Pepis Refuge, Pedrera, Seville – help the dogs the Spanish don’t want

Pepis 400 009A couple of years ago Pepi’s Refuge was hit by the parvo virus, resulting in a huge vet bill. This year they were hit by distemper. With so many dogs in the refuge and donations dropping considerably, there was not the money to vaccinate against the disease. 3 galgos died, Jane Brian is still giving medication to several others. This week she was rushed into hospital with severe pains. She is now back at the refuge, on medication but still giving medication to the dogs – the dogs always come first with Jane and Alan.

Things have never been so dire at the refuge. On one hand we have fewer dogs than we have in a long time, on the other there’s no money to feed them, let alone get them prepared for transport. Donations have never been so slow and despite Alan and Jane using their pensions week in and week out, the pot is empty. The distemper that rampaged through the refuge has amounted to a huge vet bill that we simply cannot pay. And whilst it is unpaid we cannot take any other dogs to get them prepared to travel to foster and forever homes.

    A home for Conguita

She was not yet two months old when she was found together with her mum abandoned on a field. We do not know what happened to her siblings but it is certain that Conguita is a survivor.

Now her mum is adopted and Conguita is left alone. She needs urgently a family now, a shelter is not the best place for a puppy to grow up. The small girl is most affectionate and longing for a home.

  • Scooby rescuing in Mazarron, Murcia – hounds victims of galgueros’ brutality!

Scooby Marazzon 2 400Scooby collected 27 dogs, mainly podencos and greyhounds in Mazarrón, Murcia, last weekend (22/23 April 2017). A Spanish region where the galgueros’ and hunters’ brutality is unbelievable.

Some of them are in a terrible condition; like this adorable brindle male galgo that is ‘skin and bones’, and suffers from Leishmania, and the black female galga that lacks a paw … Both are in Fermin´s place till they become stronger and ready for adoption.

This season the abandonment has been quite high in Castilla y Leon so we have only been able to pick up dogs in the south of Spain twice; in January in Cadiz and now in Murcia. For now on and until our economic situation improves, we will not be able to rescue more …
