  • Advice on donating to appeals

Over the years of my involvement with the plight of the galgos and podencos – and dozens of other deserving dogs in Spain – I receive many appeals each week to raise funds to help refuges and in particular money for vet fees for badly injured/sick dogs. I’ve come across one or two people who I subsequently discovered were appealing for money for a dog which they in fact did not have and had no links to! So I try to only post appeals on behalf of associations, refuges and individual who I know and who are established.

Vivienne Wharton of ACTIN has written this article on the subject, which contains some very good advice.

  • Listening Dogs make reading aloud Fun

In the UK, my first greyhound – a stray who turned up from nowhere and put her feet firmly under the table – became a very popular PAT dog – that’s Pets As Therapy. Molly and I used to visit a retirement home where the residents enjoyed talking about the dogs they had owned, and sharing their birthday cake with her. It’s not a scheme which operates very much where I now live in France, sadly.

Here’s another idea of how dogs can help with therapy.

  • Should a dog be kept on a chain?

In France, dogs are kept on short chains as ‘guard’ dogs, even border collies! In Spain and the Spanish Islands, they are kept on chains sometimes all their lives. Here’s an interesting article asking the question ‘ should a dog be kept on a chain?’.

  • Pemphigus Foliaceous – auto immune disease – has your dog suffered?

My first galga, Karmel, developed pemphigus foliaceous, a genetic disease which breaks down the auto immune system of a dog – or cat – and also in humans. I have just been contacted by a galgo adoptant, whose beautiful 3yr old galga has been diagnosed with pf, and is desperate for any help regarding treatment, as her vet is running out of ideas. Besides the articles I wrote on Galgo News about Karmel and pf, are there any other readers who have had a diagnosis of pemphigus foliaceous in their dogs? If so, please email me band@bbrennan.eu

  • Dog Traffikers – Spain to Italy!

It’s not always good news, when appeals have been circulated about galgos in killing stations – that they are then ‘adopted’! Depending on the killing station, some of the dogs are taken into the care of rescue associations – such as from SOS Badajoz, Zaragosa, to name but two. But others, such as Mairena, don’t care, they are simply happy to accept a payment of about 30 euros/dog, no matter where the dog goes.

  • Why save abandoned animals in Spain? A Volunteer explains

The British have a reputation as animal lovers – considering the number of cruelty cases the RSPCA deal with, that statement is often questioned. But there is no doubt that when Brits move abroad to live, they find it difficult to ignore the plight of abandoned animals – dog, cats, horses, donkeys – and are drawn into helping these innocent abused souls.

This is the story of one such Brit who moved many years ago to live in Spain.

  • Treatment for Canine Leishmaniosis – Pro-Galgo shares

Pro Galgo Resu 250 12 2012I recently received an email from a researcher at the Royal Veterinary College in London on the subject of leishmaniosis in stray dogs in Spain and Portugal. This is Mo Swatek’s galga Recu, who was treated for the disease, and she writes with information on the leishmaniosis treatment prescribed by the Pro-Galgo vet.

‘We have in our group of 23 rescue dogs, 7 positive with canine leishmaniasis.

All of them receive 100mg allopurinol per 10kg of body weight 2 times a day. some have received the new LEISGUARD treatment, others the injections of glucantime if the liver and kidney allows it.
