Treatment for Canine Leishmaniosis – Pro-Galgo shares

Pro Galgo Resu 250 12 2012I recently received an email from a researcher at the Royal Veterinary College in London on the subject of leishmaniosis in stray dogs in Spain and Portugal. This is Mo Swatek’s galga Recu, who was treated for the disease, and she writes with information on the leishmaniosis treatment prescribed by the Pro-Galgo vet.

‘We have in our group of 23 rescue dogs, 7 positive with canine leishmaniasis.

All of them receive 100mg allopurinol per 10kg of body weight 2 times a day. some have received the new LEISGUARD treatment, others the injections of glucantime if the liver and kidney allows it.

Some, because of old age or fragile health, only receive allopurinol, but all have very good health, look good, no weight loss, no bad coat, no dandruff etc. All of them came in really bad shape and have recovered exclusively with good food and allopurinol. However, the treatment was only started after the weight returned to normal.

My experience with leishmania dogs is very positive but we treat only galgos and podencos that possibly have a higher tolerance to the disease due to the genetic background in this area for thousands of years. The very few other breeds we had positive in leishmania were affected by the disease much more than the sighthounds and did not recover so well, some did not make it.’

Pro-Galgo recently saved 2 galgos and 2 podencos, all living rough together, sadly they were too late for another galga in the group. Here’s the story. They desperately need microchipping, vaccinations, castrating – please donate towards these costs so that the dogs can be prepared for adoption, Paypal to glorialaraneyra@hotmail.com. And also contact Mo if you can offer one of them a forever home.
