The situation in Spain for the galgos and podencos remains desperate. Every day I receive appeals for help to get dogs out of perreras or abandoned and living on the streets. It seems to me that the galgueros are hanging fewer dogs and simply dumping them and expecting the refuges and rescue associations to take them in. They continue to dump their dogs at the gates of refuges too – tied up overnight for the volunteers to find the following day.

Irish Greyhound Board sending greyhounds to Spain – MADNESS!
Horrendous news for Irish greyhounds. The Irish Greyhound Board will stop at nothing to make money! First of all they were going to send them to the Far East, now it’s Spain! Unbelievable, remembering that Anne Finch, SOS Galgos and others joined together to get the Barcelona racetrack closed down and the 700 greyhounds homed.

Urgent help needed – serious storm damage to kennels at Portugal Dog Rescue!
Remember Estrela and more recently Duke? Saved by Portugal Dog Rescue. On 22nd October the very worst happened at the shelter – the ‘temporary’ roof came down at the shelter, sadly one dog had to be pts. You can read the full story below. The new kennels which were built after an appeal earlier in the year are fine, more now need to be built in place of the ‘temporary’ one so that this never happens again.
Teresa does most of the rescuing and rehoming herself, looking after the dogs, plus having a job. An incredible lady who does not need the heartache of this happening. It costs 50 euros to build a new permanent kennel. Please help if you can, any amount helps buy some more bricks, tiles for the roof…here’s where you can donate.

Training hunting dogs in Spain – tied to a plough!
This photo is actually a still from a video showing dozens of hunting dogs including podencos tied on short chains to a field plough and pulled behind either a tractor or Land Cruiser type vehicle. Some of the dogs are trying to jump out, barking, howling…it’s unbelievable. The video is currently only available on facebook so I have asked that it be uploaded onto Youtube and then I can link to it for you all to see the horror! I don’t have details of when and where it was taken, have asked those questions too.

9th October 2013 – trial of a hunter who hung his galgos…
I have had the date of 9th October 2013 on my calendar for months, ever since Sandra Baas of Asociacion Baase Galgo announced that this would be the date of the court case against the galguero in Toledo who hung his galgos. ‘Oh, I didn’t know I shouldn’t’ he claimed!!
‘October 9th, a court trial took place today at Juzgado n1 de lo Penal de Toledo for the man who murdered his two galgos by hanging. Two years ago, the corpses of the two young dogs (one was 22 months old, the other was 5 years old) were found in the Fuensalida, Toledo location. The dogs had been hung and killed.

ACTIN/AWSM galgos for adoption
This is Ky, who I recently met with the rest of the ACTIN/Animal Welfare Support Murcia Galgos Aysha, Rubio and Donna – who’s only a year old. They all have a tale to tell of cruelty and suffering at the hands of the galgueros but are now safe in foster and waiting for their forever homes. They’ve been waiting quite a long time, there must be someone out there who has space in their hearts and homes for these beautiful galgos.
Ky is black and white, Aysha is a stunning chocolate brown, Rubio is tan and Donna is in the bottom pix lying on the sofa! You can also see me below with little Podenca mum Bonny, also looking for a forever home, and their foster mom Sherlie. If you can’t adopt one, please consider sponsoring one – they all need to eat, why not sponsor a galgo for a month or more.
Please contact ACTIN if you wish to sponsor adopt one. admin@actin-spain.com
