  • Life in the fast lane in Cadiz – not if you’re an injured galgo

Cadiz galgo injured 1 250 16 05 2011 And another example of how so many Spaniards turn away from injured and abandoned animals. This galgo is injured,(right hind leg) very frightened, lying in a car park, just metres away from a hotel/restaurant. No one goes to help him. Can anyone find room for me to take him? mariavazquez.cadiz @ gmail.com

  • A week in the life of an animal rescuer in Spain – could you hack it?!

Ali's_rope Tina 10 05 2011 250 Regular readers will know that wherever possible I praise the fantastic volunteers in Spain who give so much of their time and emotional and physical effort in helping the abandoned and mistreated animals, often at great cost to themselves.

So many stories continue to arrive in my Inbox, not just for help for galgos and podencos but other dogs as well. As I speak, efforts are being made by volunteers to catch a family of podencos, other galgos loose on the streets of several towns…..it is never ending.

This story is one example of a week in the life of a volunteer.

  • Dumped in a rubbish bin – Spanish galga Esperanza’s fight for life

Esperanza in surgery 250 08 05 2011 Latest update on Esperanza, the galga some bastard tried to kill and dumped in a rubbish bin. What an amazing fighter she is, hanging onto life, and what an amazing team of people are helping her.

‘Esperanza’s surgery has finished. She is alive but she needs intensive care. Surgery has not been easy. Vets put needles and surgical cement to rebuild her broken vertebra. There is reserved prognosis, at least, until a couple of days, because her life is still in danger. Her health condition is delicate. If everything is OK, a new period of ten days will start.

  • Beat the Spanish sandfly! Preventitive treatment for Leishmania – donate

Leishmania is the third most important canine disease worldwide, caused by the bite of the sandfly. It is passed between dogs when the sandfly bites an infected dog and then bites another dog. Understandably it is rampant in the dog refuges of the Mediterranean countries. It is diagnosed by blood test and, if untreated, can be fatal. Scalibor collars are used by many rescue associations but these are expensive. Now there is a new cheaper treatment.

Sighthound Welfare Trust have launched this appeal on behalf of Baas Galgo.

  • Galgos del Sol – catching the abandoned galgos in Murcia

Galgos del Sol is a small association formed in October 2010 by Tina Solera, who had spent the previous few years saving galgos and podencos which ended up in Los Infiernos dog shelter. In the past 7 months GdS have rescued and rehomed 53 galgos and podencos. But as with all associations, they exist on donations and fundraising. Here are four of the latest galgos to be rescued – from the side of a motorway, in the middle of a lorry transport area, terrified loose on the campo. Vet fees are mounting, please donate if you can help them.

  • Update from El Albergue on galga dumped in a rubbish bin

Update on the galgo dumped in a rubbish bin. ‘It is a female galga, and is very serious, especially from a strong blow to the head but still alive. We are waiting to see how it evolves and will soon need a CT scan (scanner) of the head. She is now hospitalized at a veterinary clinic. Please, if you know who wants to help with veterinary expenses let us know, because in our humble association we can do no more, but the cases that come to us are so desperate that we can not ignore them and look the other way. A hug and thank you very much for your interest.’

  • Galgo pup with gangrene – Pro-Galgo saves him – see his progress

Wonderful news from Mo Swatek of Pro Galgo. Do you remember the story of the galgo puppy with gangrene in his tail and rear end. Here are 2 videos where you can see little TIGRE being a happy boy with his girlfriend CHANEL in his foster family (with a little luck they will keep him). His fosters say that he is a real monster pup but so loving and charming that they forgive him everythings

I do my best, but I can’t always post them all.

This story from a volunteer with the El Albergue asso sums up the galguero attitude to his dog.
