  • Update on galgo Arkos – not good news

    Arkos leg 2 400
Well, it’s been a day of surprises…. and not really very good ones at that! As you all know Arkos went in for what we thought was his surgery on his damaged hock. But, before going ahead, the Specialist decided he needed his own, more definitive X-rays of the the whole leg and… low and behold…a further, even older serious injury was discovered. So, in addition to the injury to the hock, this poor long suffering dog has also suffered a cruciate ligament injury (we don’t know when). This really needs to be done before the fractured Calcaneus procedure can be performed.

So, following X-rays and tests today, Arkos will have the Cruciate Ligament surgery tomorrow and the op originally planned for today will be performed when the Cruciate Ligament procedure has had time to heal, in about 6 weeks time!

Obviously, this is bad news in every way, but we feel that Arkos has suffered all his life and he deserves every chance to experience life as it SHOULD be for a loved Galgo, so we have made the decision to go ahead and use the money that has already been so kindly donated by many of you. We sincerely hope that everyone who donated won’t mind?

  • Should you soak dry dog food?

I have lived with dogs all my life – when I was born our family dog was already 1 year old! As far as I can remember, we have always put a small amount of gravy or stock on our dogs’ meals. My elderly galga Carmela now has problems crunching large croquettes so she is on the ones for small dogs which she manages no problem. However, I must admit I am not keen on the idea of soaking croquettes for hours.

Here’s another interesting article from the Whole Dog Journal on the subject.

To those of you following the story of Arkos and who kindly donated towards his operation, plus the fundraising auction held on facebook, there is enough money for Arkos’ operation. Here’s the latest news from Anne Carroll.

‘Arkos will have his operation on Tuesday, 16th April. Thank you everyone who donated…we’ll keep you informed of his progress, fingers crossed.’

  • Scooby to the rescue of galgos again!

Scooby galga thrown from van 400 4 2019
From Cobie at Scooby Residencia Valladolit. THROWN FROM A VAN!

After falling from the vehicle the poor creature was hit by another car.

This happened in Salamanca, and we have no words to describe how angry such abhorrent cruelty makes us feel. We wonder what kind of ruthless people-people lacking any compassion-we are surrounded by.

Fortunately some residents saw what happened and notified the police. They picked up the galga, who-besides being absolutely terrified-only sustained some blows to her body and various bruises in an incident that could’ve resulted in more serious injuries. They were able to catch and take her to a vet and she miraculously survived with only a nasty fright.

She is ok, stable and is being taken care of by our veterinarians, who will be observing her to make sure that the apparently superficial injuries are really just that.

  • How to train your dog off-leash

Many people can walk their galgos and podencos off leash. Unfortunately mine have strong hunting instincts and as we live on a farm with meadows full of birds, hares, feral cats and the neighbouring ones have sheep in, we can never walk ours off leash. • PACMA demand hunting in Castille y Leon be stopped

    Spanish hunters Castilla y Leon 400 3 2019
From the CREL newsletter of March 13, 2019

The Spanish animalist party (PACMA) claims the protection of wildlife and takes legal action.

The Hunting Act in Castilla y León (Spain) will be amended to “paralyze any hunting activity until further notice”. All this at the request of PACMA (Party of Animalists Against Animal Abuse).

Laura Duarte, spokesperson of the Spanish animalist party, argued that the regulation in question does not comply with the European directive “habitat fauna flora”, which applies to all species. Therefore, “if it is not consistent, this paralysis should continue”.
