  • Tombola draw results – raising funds for Pepis Dog Refuge

Thank you to everyone who bought tickets for my tombola raising funds for Pepis Dog Refuge. A disappointing response, only 36 tickets sold – 180 euros – so thank you again to those of you who took part. I donated all but one of the prizes – Pat King kindly donated the pet portrait, so I’m afraid I’ll have to ask winners to pay postage. Here are the results, my friend Jenny Robinson picked the numbers to place on the prizes. Photos below, plus postage – which please paypal to me band@bbrennan.eu and I’ll confirm when the prize is on its way.

  • Levriers sans Frontieres – 30 more galgos to homes in France

Photos of the latest rescue trip by Levriers sans Frontieres of 30 galgos from Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert shelter near Seville, to homes in France. Great for the galgos but, with at least one association travelling into Spain to bring galgos back to France for homing, France is sinking under the number! It’s getting more and more difficult for them all to find homes.

  • Are galgos carriage hounds?

Carriage training galgos 3 190The Junta in Andalucia had no regard for the health and well being of galgos when they rescinded the law banning hounds being trained from motorised vehicles – whether vans, 4×4, quad bikes, motorbike. This ignoramus would have got round the ban anyway…can you believe this?!! How close are those galgos to the carriage wheels! They don’t stand a chance if he puts the horse into trot!!! I’d like to rope him to the back of that cart….seen in the area of Pepis Dog Refuge, Pedrera, Seville!

You may just be able to see there are 3 dogs – the chain of the white one in the middle is going over the carriages leaf springs, and the only way for that poor dog to get on the inside again is to get right beside that carriage wheel!

  • Hounds are addictive – but there has to be an upper adoption limit!

Animal hoarder poster 250 20 8 2015The above was posted on a friend’s page. I thought I’d share it with you as I have learnt that one small association just rehomed a dog to someone who already has 18 dogs! Now, I have 5 dogs, french lurcher, 3 galgos and a podenco. All but one is too old to insure, so vet bills can be expensive. The old lurcher is on tablets which cost my hubbie 100 euros/month. On top of that, of course, we have dog food. I cannot understand how someone can afford 18 – soon to be 19 dogs!

I know the situation in Spain for the galgos and podencos is horrendous and associations are desperate to home dogs, to make room to rescue another one. But there has to be some sense applied in who is allowed to adopt. In France, if you have more than 9 dogs, you have to register as a kennels.

  • Sarna Semodecica Pioderm – an extreme case

Scooby Lucy 1 250 7 2015This poor galga is called Lucy. She was taken to the Scooby refuge in the middle of July, in this state. Cobie tells her story.

16/7/2015. This sweet little galga girl is Lucy, she´s 5 months old and was saved a few weeks ago from the perrera provincial from Valladolid by Scooby. The police had taken her there because she was walking on the street although she had an owner which was a gypsie. That person had done nothing about the severe mange she was suffering of and her whole body was covered in blood, infections and bad wounds. She was in a lot of pain and was very depressed because of the bad state she was in. Nobody wanted to go near her because they thought she was like a monster and they feared to be infected by her illness. So she got worse and worse every day until she got to this state. Poor girl. She has a long way to go to full recovery but she will get all the time she needs to become a gorgeous galga. She is in the clinic in Medina now and surrounded with love, attention, good care and medicines.
