Eurogroup for Animals is very pleased that the European Green Party’s Common Manifesto for the European elections 2014 has listed animal protection among its priorities for the next term. It dedicates a whole paragraph to animal welfare.

Djimba in France and the story of blind galgo Maik
This is the story of Maik, a blind galgo who arrived at Djimba, Betty’s sanctuary Djimba in France. Here she tells his story as far as is known.
‘We think he has been used as a hunting dog till he got problems with his eyes. He was dumped on the streets, but somehow managed to survive till some brave ladies caught him (the video is here).
He went into a fosterhome and they went to a vet for his eyes. On one eye he is completely blind, on the other he has 10% “sight” (shadows), he needs special care 4x a day to treat his eyes. (They make no tears) eventually he will loose sight in this eye too.

40+ galgos at Badajoz perrera Asociacion Baas Galgo reserve 10 and have now reserved another 13 but they have to pay their pound fees to save them. To raise this money, they are inviting people to choose a name for one of the 23 galgos.
We need to pay the fees of the other 10+ ASAP! For that we need donations. We also need to pay for the initial expenses of basic vet care and at least a month in the residence.
They all need names as well.So, who wants to give a galgo a name? We will have a mini auction on this event page for the “naming rights”!

Greyhounds/Galgos and anaesthetic – what every vet should know
Devastating news this week about a beautiful galgo puppy called Picasso, who was rescued and fostered by Bev Farmer (Podenco Friends). He was adopted by a couple in the UK who already have greyhounds so they are experienced sighthound owners.
Mischievous Picasso did what puppies frequently do, he swallowed something he shouldn’t have and was taken to the vet. The adoptants mentioned to the vet about the potential problem of greyhounds and anaesthetic – because of their slow heartbeat and lack of body fat, they should have minimal anaesthetic for as short a time as possible.

Following the uproar and publicity about the Mairena perrera earlier this month, PACMA have called a meeting. Here is their invitation to any of you living in the area who wish to go.
‘Following the submission of the dossier that we documented more than 50 cases of abuse and neglect of animals used for hunting, we have convened a concentration Saturday 22 February 2014, at 11 in the morning, in the Plaza del Callao in Madrid.
We will meet in the General direction of the SEPRONA to introduce a series of proposals aimed at improving the situation of these animals, know their protocols, and establish the necessary mechanisms for a fruitful collaboration that promotes the eradication of the neglect and mistreatment of animals in our country.
