  • Update on galga Tina at Pepis Dog Refuge

Tina 2 190 1 2014She has been to the vet for her regular check up, our vet was not happy that she had made enough progress with her leg. The xrays showed the break has mended fine, but Tina still refuses to use her leg. We do exercise her leg every day and she is still on medication. There should be no reason now why she cannot use that leg, so as the picture shows, we will now as often as we physically can, make her have to use the back leg and get the muscle built up again, ready for her next operation to remove the metal plates.

Tina is a gorgeous galga and will make someone a fabulous companion. I met her during my recent visit to Pepis as she wandered around the drive with her house mates.

  • Galga Ishtar – from Cordoba to Finland – working through the fear

Ishtar 2 heads 190Tanja tells her story

‘I am a veterinarian and have always wanted to work with rescue dogs. For years I have wanted to adopt a galgo and after my elderly dog died I had an opportunity to finally offer a home to one. Since I have a lot of rescues as patients I was able to spread the word that I am willing to adopt a galgo who might have physical/emotional problems.

After a few months I got an email from Espanjan Koirat, a rescue organization in Finland adopting dogs from Spain. In that email was a picture of a black and white galga, lying on a concrete floor in her food dish. She was emaciated, full of scars and looked very traumatized. And within an instant I had made the decision, this would be my family member.

It was only after a while that I was able to track down the recent history of my Ishtar.

  • Galgos in Spain – a hard life – Levriers sans Frontiers reports

This link takes you to the story of galgos now being dumped by the hunters as the season draws to a close. This young galgo was abandonded on the streets of Ejica, hit by a vehicle; eventually rescued and taken to the bet who said luckily his injuries were not serious. Not so for many – males not wanted as stud dogs, females not wanted for breeding for the next season, or covered and then dumped when their puppies are weaned – too soon in many cases.

  • Scooby Junta – the law on ‘training’ galgos from motorised vehicles

This note was sent by Cobie at Scooby Valladolid – you may remember last year the Junta proposed rescinding the law in Andalucia.

‘Good news: this letter, send to Fermin, informs that the junta de Andalucia will NOT approve the training from galgos behind motorised vehicles, it STAYS forbidden like in the rest from Spain!

    Fermin: ¡Lo hemos conseguido!

  • ACTIN – fighting the war against animal cruelty in Cartagena, Murcia

Viv Wharton and the ACTIN team do incredible work in the Cartagena area of Murcia where animal cruelty among the Spanish is rife. At the moment they are working to close down a municipal dog pound and need all the support they can get, especially to pay their legal and vet fees for the dogs they take out, some of whom are extremely sick. Read about it here and donate to show your support for the incredible work they do. They are setting a precedent in Spain.

  • A New Year message

I wish all of you a healthy and happy 2014 and may the best of the past year be the worst of 2014. Today I am having a shoulder operation to repair damaged tendons so my typing activity will be curtailed for a few weeks. Please continue supporting the appeals and associations already posted. I will post more news as and when I can – one-handed! Difficult when I’m a speed touch typist!

  • Portugal Dog Rescue – Duke now in rehab with 112carlot

Whilst I was in Spain for Xmas, I spent a few days at 112carlotagalgos and got to meet Duke, son of Estrela who I fostered for a short while before taking her to her forever home in the UK. He is now looking stunning but is still very nervous and retreats to his bed or the other end of the orchard whenever someone enters. Here you can see an update on how he is doing with Charl’s special touch.
