  • Plataforma NAC – still fighting for Spain’s hunting dogs

    PNAC 19 June 350
The European Commission forgets about hunting dogs. Key Vote in the European Parliament and Next Steps.

On June 19, the European Parliament will vote in plenary session an important proposal. Following this vote, negotiations will begin with the European Commission and the Council of the European Union, the latter composed by the ministers of the Member States.

This day is crucial as Parliament still has the opportunity to rectify any shortcomings of the Agriculture Commission and ensure that both dogs and cats receive the adequate protection they deserve.

  • Galgos De Leon – Galga Mina with a head trauma

    Leon Mina 2 350
    With Galgos de Leon

MINA Galgos De León received a notice yesterday of an abandoned galga with a severe head trauma, so they immediately arranged everything to go get it. They took her directly to the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Leon where she has been admitted and they are already testing her, and the ophthalmologist of the hospital will evaluate, hopefully she doesn’t lose her eye.
And depending on the results of the Rx you still have to do a CT scan. She’s stable, but not out of danger.

Let’s hope that there are no complications and that everything goes well, now there is no forecast of anything, but to continue organizing, they are looking for a #fosterhouse in #León for when they leave. If you can host her write a WhatsApp to 686369225.

  • Galgo statue in Barcelona

    Barca statue 5 2025 350
Tucked quietly along a street in Barcelona, there stands a sculpture that stops people in their tracks.

It’s called The Abandoned Dog, created by Catalan artist Artur Aldomà Puig. No pedestal. No glory. Just a dog—sculpted in stone, sitting alone, waiting.

Its eyes are what pull you in. Wide. Hopeful. Full of quiet sorrow. It’s not just a statue—it’s a message. This sculpture is a tribute to every dog who gave their love, only to be left behind. It speaks for the voiceless. The loyal. The forgotten.

Next to the figure is a poem by the artist himself, etched in metal. It reads:

  • Galgo puppy rescued from drowning

Galgo puppy rescued from a pond on the verge of death. Full of ticks and in a miserable state. This little one is Candy and Protectora Fido took care of her, taking her to the vet immediately. Deeply sad and regrettably, an all too common image of the cruelty and neglect suffered by many animals, especially hunting dogs in Spain.

Finding a galgo puppy in that state is not an isolated case. It’s a symptom of a systemic problem: uncontrolled breeding, the use of animals as mere tools, and the subsequent discardment when they are no longer “useful” or profitable.

This headline highlights the total irresponsibility of those who own these animals. It’s not only about the action of abandoning, but also about the previous negligence of allowing such a vulnerable living being to such an extreme of malnutrition and parasitic infestation.

They need a foster in Murcia or responsible adoption for the little girl.

  • 10 more galgos arrive at Galgos del Sur

At Asociación Galgos del Sur they take care of 10 new galgos discarded by hunters.

These 10 galgos come from Murcia, discarded by hunters for not being useful for hunting.

Galgos are not born from trees, they are massively bred for the hunting world and discarded when tested and of no use.

Galgos del Sur are at the limit of their means but they don’t stop picking up dogs and the abandonment doesn’t stop. They need help to move on.

  • Galgo Bono with Galgos 112 – hoping for a forever home

    From Galgos 112

Hi I’m Bono! I’m one and a half years old and they say I’m very friendly and loving. Still hard to believe what happened to me. I lived with my other galgo friends, we shared games and food in a pen. Every once in a while our owner would take us for a run in the middle of the olives, he would get very pleased if we chased the rabbits.

But one day, when I saw him coming to the pen, I thought it was time to go out to chase rabbits, as always I climbed a jump into the trunk of the car but it took longer to arrive than usual, my owner stopped the engine, as other times he opened the trunk and I jumped outside, but that day there was something strange, my owner, without looking at me, got back in the car, started and left leaving me there alone. I didn’t understand anything.

  • Galgos in Lithuania

I’ve been concerned that some galgos and podencos are now travelling as far as Lithuania and Poland to forever homes. I’ve googled searching for adoption associations in those countries, to reassure myself that there is back up if the dog does not settle in the home. This is a post I found on facebook about lure coursing with galgos in Lithuania.

‘Tina’s first lure coursing competition with a bang! Tina won not only 1st place among galgo, but also 2nd among all-breed 60 participants! But that’s not the most important thing, but that the dog simply enjoyed and fulfilled the need for the hunting! A fascinating view to see how the nature of the kite unfolds – to run and hunt with eyes! I had goosebumps looking at Tina
    Kurt running is something else!

Many years ago when I was on the L’Europe des Levriers team, we visited La Bienvenida Protectora in Cuidad Real, 200km south of Madrid. There was a gypsy encampment not far away and the Protectora volunteers were terrified some of the galgos could get stolen overnight, even though broken glass topped all the shelter walls.

  • Rescued about to give birth by Galgos del Sol

    Birth mom GDS 5 2025 350
You will never meet a braver more noble soul than that of a Galgo. The Galgueros never feel shame at what they do. One day they will see, the Galgo español is far more worthy than they (the hunter) could ever be.

Just thinking about what these dogs go through and how many, not all, survive against all odds makes one wonder so many things. The ups and the downs, those we could save, those we couldn’t…
