  • Carmela – abused by a Spanish hunter – discovering the good life after rescue

    Carmela 270
On the way back from my trip in June to Cordoba with the French association L’Europe des Levriers, I collected a galga named Carmela, who was coming back with me for fostering and rehoming. I already have my galga Sahara, Podenca Ebano Bebe, and French levrier X Floyd – my Swedish Valhund Pepsi having disappeared presumed stolen at the beginning of August.

Carmela’s history is a little unclear; taken to a perrera for euthanasia at the end of hunting in January, she had arrived at a refuge, been taken on by EDL for adoption and rehoming in France. She was part of the galgos which travelled to France in April 2009, adopted by a family in southern France.

  • Galga Paca – an incredible survivor – safe at last in France

Paca on the bed 0709 300You may remember the story of Paca, a poor brindle galga who had been dreadfully injured by being dragged behind a car. I joined L’Europe des Levriers on their trip into Spain in March 2009, and Paca was one of the lucky galgos we brought out to new homes in France.

I am happy to report that she has now been in her forever home for 4 months, eats lots, has gained weight, and her wounds are healing well. She is still, understandably, terrified of men, adores children, is very playful, especially with her other galgo companions. She walks freely in the garden, comes on recal, loves beds and is very affectionate. Her suffering is ended.

  • Update on Tallis – galgo puppy rescued from Spain, rehomed in France

Tallis waiting for dinner 300Last year we met Tallis, a young galgo puppy rescued along with others from the same litter by L’Europe des Levriers, who found her forever home with an English couple in the south west of France. Tallis has written to tell us how she is going on.

    Hello!

It’s me, Tallis and I’m writing to tell you that I am now one year old and quite grown up. I have been learning lots of lessons during my first year, but I thought you’d like to hear about some of my hobbies.

  • Podencos – Travelling to the UK by Personal Chauffeur

Vicki Thomas Leon and Dolly 250Vicki Thomas used to live in Spain but has now returned to the UK. She left behind her podenco/labrador Leon until his pet passport was in order for him to join them. She decided to bring him back from southern Spain by car, and to adopt another podenco to take back to the UK at the same time. She contacted me through Galgo News and I was able to give her the names of 2 associations in Spain who were likely to have podencos with a pet passport for the UK.

Vicki tells the story of her adventure.

Leon was found along with his 7 brothers and sisters dumped in a rubbish bin in La Cala, Mijas. They were a couple of days old and were suffering from chemical burns but had managed to fight their way through the rubbish so that they could be heard from the street.

  • Introducing Sahara – from Spain with love

Galgos Rescue 2009 109 Beryl & Sahara 250Meet Sahara, an 18 month old brindle galga.

She was handed in to a perrera by her galguerro when he had finished with her at the end of the hunting season.

She is a happy confident gal, luckily no signs of mistreatment.

I went down to Madrid to collect her and she has now settled happily into my canine family at my home in France.

  • Tallis arrives in France – A galgo puppy happily rehomed

    Tallis
Temperatures in northern Spain in winter are below freezing. Many of the animal refuges and shelters do not have even basic kennels – it’s just a compound within a breeze block wall, with shelter provided by a motley assortment of pallets, tin sheets, donated bedding – anything!

  • Venus – A Story with a Happy Ending

VenusMeet Venus, a happy rehoming story.

Marisa Pérez, a volunteer with El Refugio Escuela who rescued my little Malaguena Podenca Andaluz, Bebe, from a Seville motorway, has been fostering this beautiful white galga. Marisa tells the story:

‘I found her just before the moment she was crossing the motorway and when I called her she started moving her tail so happy and came to me as knowing she was being saved. She weighed hardly 15 kilos when I carried her to my car. (On average a galgo weighs double that!)

  • Free Spirit – Rosario the Survivor has finally been caught

RosarioI don’t have a lot of details yet, but Rosario has finally been caught.

She was an abandoned galga in Spain, it took the Spanish volunteers several months to catch her. She was then vaccinated, blood tested, spayed and brought out of Spain into France in February 2008. Only a couple of hours after arriving at her foster home, she escaped.

Her foster family have searched and tracked her, tried to catch her, to no avail. Her foster mum lost weight with the stress and worry, not sleeping at night, waiting for a call that Rosario had been sighted.

She was finally caught on 21st July 5 months after she escaped, 5 months after living on the street, surviving.
