My new year wish…a safe happy warm home for all the galgos. Sadly just a wish, whilst the hunting federations are so strong.

Cordoba – Adopt a Galgo
An amazing mural in the municipal park of Baena (Córdoba), to give visibility to the dogs in the perreras, in particular to encourage adoption, especially of galgos, a dog breed very battered and abandoned in Spain, with greater presence in Andalusia.

I am a Galgo
I am a galgo,greyhound,
I am built for speed,
but now I run from man’s misdeeds
I do not mind running
or hunting for you
That is how I am built
That is what I do
But why do you hurt me
When with me you are done
You kill or desert me
When I no longer won
I am a galgo of soft eyes
And softer demeanor
I love all my humans
And am quite a good leaner
Please do not throw me away
In your heart let me stayKaren Lyons Kalmenson

The Greyhound Health Initiative news
Here is the latest newsletter from the Greyhound Initiative linked with Dr Guillermo Couto, who has done extensive research into galgos as well as greyhounds. On the subject of the greyhound with the allergy to dust mites etc in the house, we have tiled floors in our home in France and I would never ever return to living in a house with wall to wall carpeting, as we had in the UK. I have pads on the tiled floors which the dogs can sleep on, and vetbed, all of which can be washed regularly to get rid of the dust.
When we moved to France, my horse developed an allergy to dust mites – in the hay, stone stables,
bedding. I purchased a nebulizer to give him treatment – he was such a good boy standing with the equipment on – but in the end we moved house to a farm with over 6 hectares where he can live outside. What we do for our pets, eh!

Marching in Malaga for Day of the Galgo & Podenco
Ann Marie Payne of SOS Animals, Malaga, took part in the Day of the Galgo March there on Sunday 4th February. Here is her report.‘Well we finally got to the march In Malaga, but not without incident I might add. First of all I was late (as usual) picking JacquiRoss up, but we arrived safely in the centre of Malaga. Neither of us knew where we were going, so it was like the blind leading the blind. Roadworks everywhere and diversions. We wanted to go right and the signs said go left Grrrr.
Eventually we stopped at some traffic lights, and there to our left was the march, but we couldn’t see anywhere to park. So we had to head straight on. We were nearly back on the motorway before we could turn round again, miles out of our way. I think we passed the North Pole. Heading back I said to Jacqui, I know a great place to park, which I found, took me ages to get in it, and then she said ” I think we’re miles away” (God help me). So I did what you shouldn’t do in the centre of Malaga, a U turn. Back on the main road towards the marina we saw a parking sign. Any port in a storm will do, but we wanted to be at the port!!! So we parked up and started walking.

Winter storms – rain and wind spell disaster for Scooby refuge
In December 2017 in the heavy storms one of the sheds where our horses and donkeys take shelter and eat, lost the walls because of the wind ??. This month are our dogs who suffer the consequences of rain and snow.We need to make some repairs in our shelter, but there are many animals, those we have to feed and to give veterinary attention monthly (about 700 among dogs, cats and farm animals) and we need your help to be able to face so many expenses.
Our animals will be eternally grateful you!
