  • New Comment Option for Readers

Galgo-news-blockOne thing I hope Galgo News enables is the opportunity to discover the work of new organisations and people with the many links, features and profiles on offer.

A key tool in this is the comment facility that sits at the foot of each article as it allows people to voice their support but also highlight the campaigning work being undertaken by others.

And now the comment facility has been enhanced so that people can establish a presence both on Galgo News as well as elsewhere across the web.

  • A New Life In France – the Horrors of Spain Left Behind

    Galgo-rescue
L’Europe des Levriers carried out one of their monthly rescues last weekend, and 9 galgos and 2 podencos stopped overnight at my home on their way to northern France and foster and adopting homes.

  • Reporting from Spain – helping the galgos

Virginia Labat of Passion Levriers is spending this week in Spain with friends. This is her report on the situation there.

I am in SPAIN, but no time to write a lot now so I will do it when back to France.

It is very hard, a lot of dogs everywhere and no place for them in the shelters so we feed them by night by the roads where they live.

We try to catch the puppies but the mothers always change the place where she keeps them so we wait in the rain. I cry a lot but my friends help me a lot too.

  • Urgent Appeal – help save the leg of this galga!

GalgoThere was galgo racing in Extramadura on 18th October. Lali was running. During a race she broke her femur, so her galguero left her in a refuge because he said ‘I will not need her anymore, she is dead for racing’.

The vet said she is in good health and, with a simple 3 hour operation, she would be able to walk the day after. The surgery will cost 500 euros. Every day that goes by without the operation is dangerous for Lali, as her leg would have to be amputated because she could die from septicemia.

Virginie Labat of Passion Levriers has appealed for funds for the operation.

She can vouch for the truth of this appeal as Lali is with one of Virginie’s personal friends -even 5 euros could help.

  • Update on Karmel and Pemphigus Foliaceous

It is 3 weeks since Karmel last visited the vet. Since then she has been on 1 megasolene tablet per day for 10 days, then half a megasolene tablet for 10 days. Karmel has continued in general good health – bright eyes, no skin problems, just 1 wart appearing on 1 foot, eager to walk the meadows with our other dogs.

We went back to the vet yesterday. There is still a slight problem with her feet (I can’t see it!) and her skin is not as good as it can be (I think it’s ok). I bow down to the far superior knowledge of my wonderful vet.

  • Update on Karmel – a very poorly galga

    Update 26/07

Karmel had her biopsy samples taken by the vet yesterday; one from her nose, 2 from her body and 2 from 2 different feet. The vet also took a sample of the pus from one of the hundreds of lumps now covering the whole of Karmel’s body. The samples were sent to the lab in the midday post yesterday, marked urgent. My vet will telephone the lab on Monday to speak to them about the samples, and she is hoping to have the results of the biopsy by Thursday, or even Wednesday.

In the meantime, Karmel is back on anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medication in large doses. My vet is worried that Karmel’s condition is worsening quite rapidly now and, although this medication seems to control it, long-term damage could be caused to Karmel’s organs if continued over a long period of time.

My poor galga, she does not deserve to suffer like this.
