  • Hunger Strike in Madrid – letters needed

    Beatriz Menchén is another dedicated fighter against the slaughter of dogs and cats in kennels in Spain and has worked helping animals for more than 15 years. She believes in protecting animals, not euthanasia, and has managed the animal shelter in Getafe, a large area of Madrid. The Council of Getafe has given shelter to an exterminator company that kills dogs. Many dogs have lost their lives in the hands of this company. Beatriz tried to stop these unnecessary deaths, but her words were not heeded, so she has now begun a hunger strike.

  • Galgo pup with gangrene – Pro-Galgo saves him – see his progress

    Wonderful news from Mo Swatek of Pro Galgo. Do you remember the story of the galgo puppy with gangrene in his tail and rear end. Here are 2 videos where you can see little TIGRE being a happy boy with his girlfriend CHANEL in his foster family (with a little luck they will keep him). His fosters say that he is a real monster pup but so loving and charming that they forgive him everythings

  • Life is cheap on the streets of Cuenca – galga Emy needs help

    Emy Cuenca head 04 2011 190 What a beautiful face. Another gorgeous galga abandoned and injured on the streets of Cuenca. Here is her story.

    ‘Emy was brought to us this morning from Cuenca. Emilio picked her up last night, completely terrified with a large wound in her leg. She had been wandering for several days tghrough the town but no one had stopped to help, not uncommon in this country of savages.

  • Mother & daughter galgas seeking forever homes

    Marta & Surnami 190 5 04 2011 Vanessa Luque has sent this appeal for homes for mother and daughter galgas which are currently in a refuge in Madrid, are becoming very introverted and withdrawn. Here’s what she says.

    ‘I usually publicise our dogs through my website and my Facebook profile … but there are now so many dogs in the kennels and it is causing problems. So I am appealing for these two galgas, an urgent rehoming case.

  • Baas Galgo to court today against hunter who hung 3 galgos

    Keep fingers and everything crossed today, 13th April 2011, as Baas Galgo have their first Court appointment against the man who hung his 3 galgos. Pray that the court officials, judge etc, are not hunters!

    Also, look at these fabulous photos of Nicolas and Kafir. Nicolas was rescued from near death last Christmas Eve, Kafir had a wire round his leg, he had tried to chew his leg off! Both are with Cristina de Luna in Madrid. Amazing wonderful photos. I’d just say here that anyone who thinks a 3-legged galgo can’t run, eat your words!

  • Galgo Philby, failed hunter, seeks his forever family

Has tested negative in leismania, erliquia, chipada and sterilized, comes with adoption contract and monitoring, is in foster in Madrid. Is there an association who has someone who would adopt him forever?

  • Galgos, galgos, everywhere – the pressure on the refuges is relentless

    Every day I receive emails from Spain, galgos and podencos dumped, abandoned, injured, or hunters taking them to the perreras to be killed or to the shelters and threatening to kill the dogs if the volunteers don’t take them. Day in and day out, the pressure is never ending. I have lost count of how many dogs I have been told about in Jerez, Gesser, Mairena, Cordoba, Seville, Malaga perreras. Last weekend I drove down to the Spanish border and, along with a couple of other cars, brought back 20 galgos and a couple of podencos…many of them are now in foster and awaiting forever homes.

  • Galgo rescuers brave snowstorms to save the innocents

    Link to the story of L’Europe des Levriers’ rescue at the end of January, in a snowstorm. They brought out many galgos and a couple of podencos from the refuge at Herencia, run by Rosario, including two puppies found hiding under a makeshift shelter, whom Rosario named Draco and Kyra. Draco has been adopted by an artist. As always, some of the dogs have to be left behind, waiting for the next rescue. Enjoy the pix.

  • Grand Protest in Spain – 25th March – join a march near you!

    On www.noalmaltratoanimal.org you can read or see about a big manifestation through whole Spain on the 25th of March against mistreating of animals and longer sentences in prison for people who are guilty of this.

    There is a comprehensive list of all the cities and towns in which a march is organised, time and place to meet. Please circulate this far and wide throughout Spain and get the population motivated. So many Spanish people are concerned about the bad press in the rest of the world about bull-fighting, abandoned dogs and cats, horse wrestling, animals in fiestas, donkey stoning……
