‘On 5th December 2010 galga Martha and galga Raquel arrived at Rotterdam airport.
Raquel, this sweety, 11 years old is adopted in Holland. Isn’t it great she has a second chance too? She is in paradise now and her new family love her very much. Wonderful there are people who want to take care of an old galgo too and give her love and respect. Raquel will be very happy with her loving family.
Good news about the second batch of galgos in the Jerez perrera. 6 are going to Valencia for care and rehoming, 4 are going to Malaga for care and rehoming and two are going together to their forever home in the UK. Holly and Faith, as they have been named, became bosom buddies when they were both rescued by Dioni. Their EU passport is now being prepared and then they will travel together into quarantine kennels in the UK, where their adopting family (who have been involved in greyhound rescue for decades) will be able to spend time getting to know them, preparing them to join the rest of their canine family.
All 15 of the first Jerez galgos were saved, to be immediately replaced by another 15. Everyone is overflowing with dogs, so only about half a dozen of these have been saved, and today Maribel reports another 14 have been dumped at the perrera for killing. It is just simply sickening. And the sad thing is that the more everyone who loves these dogs works to save them, the galgueros are laughing up their sleeves at the seemingly bottomless pit of foster homes and refuges willing to take them……….dump the dogs, let someone else sort the problem out!
There are young dogs, old dogs, bitches used for breeding, pregnant bitches, injured dogs – the hunters don’t give a damn. And they don’t seem to realise, or even care, that this all gives a negative impression of Andalucia.
Tonight our hearts bleed for those unable to be saved.
Last week 15 galgos were saved from death row in the Jerez killing station, Cadiz. As soon as they had been removed, another 15 arrived, dumped by the brave courageous hunters (sarcasm!). Oh, these hunters think they are such BIG men! They are not men, they are not human, they are worse than scumbags, a cockroach I would squash beneath my shoe!
Who is going to save these poor deserving terrified confused souls? 9 males, 6 females. All the shelters are collapsing under the mass abandonment this year. How many more can be saved?
Eva has sent this appeal on behalf of Scooby Medina. They are taking 130 galgos in over the course of the next month and need all sorts of help. Here’s what she says.
‘Over the next few weeks we will be rescuing 130 galgos from Seville. We are asking you for your help in every way possible.We require volunteers, vet volunteers, food, medicine and monetary donations. And of course, in the end the most important thing is to get the dogs in the shelter adopted. If you can donate any of these items, please let us know. We are doing three transport this month so we would be able to pick up any donations that are collected.
Yes, 3 years since Craig and I launched Galgo News. Time to reflect on the past year, both highs and lows.
High has definitely got to be the completion of my book and its launch – to date we’ve done 2 print runs, selling over 100 copies of the printed book and 10 ebooks. And I haven’t even started the next phase of promotion! I’ve just changed my publisher and am waiting to take collection of the next print run. The book has also now been translated into Spanish – publishing will start in January 2011. And a French translation is currently under way.
Jerez perrera, Cadiz – 15 galgos dumped for killing, at least one of them heavily in pup, all of them terrified, wondering what they have done wrong to be in such a place. The news is bad…..these 14 galgos will be euthanaised any day now! The associations who were supposed to be taking some haven’t turned up! Charl del Rio is heading there now to collect a couple but she can’t take more – can’t anyone out there help. I know the refuges and shelters are full to bursting, but please can’t someone get the galgos out? And I know, there will be dozens of other needy dogs in there, on death row. But on GN it’s the galgos and podencos we want to save. Other associations are there to take care of rescuing other breeds. And my heart bleeds for all the mixed breed dogs who don’t stand any chance of being saved.

I now know that 8 of these galgos have been rescued from being killed, unconfirmed that possibly all of them have been.
