  • Portuguese galga Estrela needs your help again

You remember the story of Estrela, the galga maltreated by an alcoholic and his heroin addict wife – many of you good people donated to pay for special milk feed for Estrela to be able to feed her pups, and have medication for pneumonia, and she was eventually allowed to be taken by Teresa to her shelter. Estrela now needs a foster or, even better, an adoption family. Here is what Ines says.

  • The Galguero and his hounds – the story of of two galgos

Charl Clio 2 250 12 2012Another piece of emotive writing from Charl del Rio of 112carlotagalgos, this time about two new arrivals at the shelter in December.

‘The count down is done and the galgos are free, chasing the chase of the hare who runs free. Whoever said that this was a sport, for a sport is something that two should play, who asked the hare if he wanted to die today?

It’s here that these galgueros walk back empty handed, not all but some who have decided that their galgos just don’t make the grade. Some having traded out, thinking others have beter dogs. A galgo is flesh at the end of the day to these galgueros, not a living creature who has feelings, a concept which only they have as consolation to such cruelty.

  • Villarejo, Salvanes – hunters disposed of hounds

Villarejo Well 2 250 12 2012The hunters continue to deny that they kill their dogs when they have no more use for them. I have seen wells in from which live galgos have been rescued…here’s the story of another one rescue alive, but others which were not so lucky. Again, this is an Internet translation, no time to correct the grammar, but you will understand the story!

A live galgo was rescued from this well, along with the remains of other dead dogs, which were put into bags and carried a locator chip that allowed the agents to identify the owner of the dogs through the College of Veterinary Surgeons , who certified the animal rescued and the remains of one that appeared in the bag belonged to same owner.

  • Please sign petition – Close Mairena killing station!

Mairena 250My heart is very heavy. I have mainly only bad news coming in from Spain at the moment – stupidity of Spanish authorities, sickening cruelty of the ‘inhuman’ species, and the suffering of all dogs in perreras. I have long publicised the Mairena perrera in Seville province, Andalusia, as one of the worst in Spain – indeed 3 or 4 years ago volunteers were stopped from taking photos of dogs needing help, because of the bad publicity. Why feed a dog you are going to kill?

Please sign this petition – if we do nothing, nothing will change – if we sign, we might make a change. Please ask everyone you know to sign. Below is an Internet translation into English; sorry, no time to correct grammar but you get the gist!

  • Dog Traffikers – Spain to Italy!

It’s not always good news, when appeals have been circulated about galgos in killing stations – that they are then ‘adopted’! Depending on the killing station, some of the dogs are taken into the care of rescue associations – such as from SOS Badajoz, Zaragosa, to name but two. But others, such as Mairena, don’t care, they are simply happy to accept a payment of about 30 euros/dog, no matter where the dog goes.
