Nice story about two lucky galgo pups saved from the El Paraiso perrera at Malaga, now in the US. April Lamb, mentioned in the article, has been working hard with Danielle Hart to try and persuade National Geographic magazine to publicise the plight of the galgos. Join in the letter-writing campaign published yesterday.

Galga Vida, Amigos de Los Galgos appeals for help for her
I’m in the UK again for a week, so limited to work I can do on the computer – some posts I scheduled to publish whilst I am away. But this one is just in, from Nuria Blanco of Amigos de Los Galgos. I don’t have a photo, but you can see all on the weblink.
‘Please help save Vida, this poor young galgo has been in hospital for a few days already. She has lost one food and she has problems in all the other three feet. At the moment, it is impossible for her to walk.’

ADANA, Badajoz, Spain – galgo lucky to be alive
ADANA have rescued this badly injured galgo, suffering multiple bites – particularly to his testicles – and a torn neck. He also has a recent scar about 2cm wide which runs round the neck. The new neck wound is very deep to such an extent that you can see they veins. The tear is about 3cm long. To have survived such horrendous injuries – cause by being bait in a dog fight, or possibly also having been hung and released means this boy has a very strong survivor instinct. He has been named River. He’s in Badajoz, a particular hell hole for galgos.
So, ADANA is appealing for help to pay the vet fees to help River on the road to recovery.
You can make donations through their bank account or by Paypal Donations on the button on their website. If you click on the Union Jack top right hand corner of the homepage, you can read their news in English.WARNING – Upsetting photos

Martin Usborne, photographer and author, visits the galgos of Malaga
Last summer I received the following email.
‘My name is Martin Usborne. I am a dog lover and professional photographer from London. I’ve recently decided to take a year out from earning to help animals, in particular dogs, and intend to write a book about my experience. I’ve just come back from India where I’ve been working with stray dogs. I want to ask the question: what happens if you drop everything and decide to follow your heart?
I can’t get the horrible pictures of the poor rejected galgos out of my head and wanted to double check if there was anything I could do as I believe January is the time of year when they suffer most. If you think I might be able to visit Spain on a short trip and write about the issue and if possible participate in some hands on rescue please let me know.’

Portugal Dog Rescue – Galga Estrela’s rescuers need help
Do you remember the story of Estrela, the galga in Portugal suffering at the hands of an alcoholic an drug addict wife? Teresa de Sousa and her team did an incredible job rescuing Estrela, another galga, and their puppies. Teresa badly needs funds to build some kennels to keep sick dogs separate from the healthy ones. She needs 350 euros – not a fortune. Please help her achieve her goal. Here are the details, you can donate by Paypal or credit card.
Update on Estrela. She is doing well in foster care, EU passport prepared, and it looks like she is going to come to me in France for temporary foster en route for her forever home in the UK. Teresa and Ines thank you all for your donations which helped them save the lives of the two galgas and their puppies.

Madrasa, Seville – abandoned galgos & podencos urgently need help
These skeletal galgos with bad skin problems have appeared in Madrasa, a suburb of Seville, they have wounds on their bodies, two have broken tails and one has problems on a back leg. They are in an area where hunters often abandon their dogs, now hunting is drawing to a close.
The podencos are also in Madrasa. One podenco is injured, weighs about 10kg, and 5 babies. They are in an area of orange trees. The male podenco has not been seen for a week.
Please can anyone take them in, help us with them?

Galgo Manolo in Valladolid – Scooby looks for a family for him
Not all galgueros are complete bastards – like the one who deliberately left galga Gala with two broken legs out in the campo in Andalucia – to starve to death in great pain. Manolo was left with Scooby Residencia Valladolid. Here Cobie tells his tale.
MANOLO was left behind in the residencia because he was ‘no good for hunting’, said the galguero. I´m sure the galguero was no good for the dog because every galgo is a champion! Manolo is very lucky because now he can start a better and happy life with a caring family who will love him dearly because he is young, 2 and a half years old, very handsome, playful, super sweet and nice, has no fear and loves all other dogs and, even more, loves people. For adoption, contact Scooby

Galga Gala – saved from a galguero murderer
Two pieces of news, which came up whilst I was stuck in the UK with hardly any computer contact.
Gala is a beautiful young galga found in a field in Andalucia with two deliberately badly broken legs – the left front and the left back – so she could not possibly get up and walk anywhere. Left by some bastard Spanish hunter to die a long and lingering and painful death. Luckily she was discovered and El Amparo took her to their vet where their vet operated on her to pin her legs back together again. Here are some before photos, and an incredible after video where she is walking with her legs splinted.
