  • A letter to Senor Galguero…

To Senor Galguero, from Beryl Brennan

I woke up ANGRY this morning. And it’s YOUR fault.

    Why?

I’m a writer; I write for newspapers, magazines, websites. I’d like to write more books – I’ve got plenty of ideas, but not the time. I used to get paid for my writing. Now, writing about anything other than galgos and podencos has taken a very back seat, so I lay the drop in my income firmly at your door. Because I don’t earn any money writing about galgos and podencos, I do it because I must, for these innocent souls. That’s for starters.

  • 100,000 + galgos abandoned at the end of hunting every year – work it out for yourself!

Boycott Spain 190 2013People say the figure of 50,000 galgos abandoned every year is exaggerated – usually it’s the hunters who say so, of course, as they don’t want the bad press. Vera of Galgos en Familia, Malaga province in southern Andalucia says, ‘Co-inciding with the end of the hunting season at this time of year, more than 5.000 galgos are abandoned by hunters in our province.

It is estimated that 1,500 galgos are collected each year from the streets of Malaga province and the majority of these from the valley of Antequera, where they are used as tools to capture hares,a hunting activity that is banned in other european countries but is still very much allowed here in Spain.

  • Galga raped in Seville!

This is from my Facebook page Save the Galgo.

‘Sorry to bear bad news but this is the most disgusting thing I ever heard. In a marginal area in Seville a poor galga now named Abril has been raped by two men, if they can be called that. Abril is in Clínica Veterinaria blelavista in Seville. She has vaginal injuries and haemorrhages from the ordeal.

She might need a foster home or a forever home. I do not know more details but what it says in the clinic page… When you think you have heard everything these bastards manage to disgust with more barbarities.’

I remember reading a story a year or two back where some Spanish men raped a horse. I’m sure it’s not the only country where it happens, sadly.

  • Galgo pup Eros – saved from hanging!

Eros Levriers du Sud 250 2 2013This pretty little pup is Eros, in the care of Levriers du Sud. Only 5 months old, he was found by a volunteer who was walking her dogs. She saw this little galgo on a tree branch. She went over and realized that he had been hung to the tree but was able to climb on a branch saving his own life! Resourceful little guy!

It’s hard to believe that anyone would hang a young puppy… They can’t tell me that it’s because he was no good for hunting… he’s so young, he’s probably never hunted. It’s insane!

  • Galgo Chapapote – stolen 4 years ago – just discovered

One of the articles in my book on the Galgo Espanol is about theft of galgos. Now you might wonder why ever anyone would steal a galgo when they can be picked up for nothing on the street. This story will explain. Thank you to Greyhounds Rescue Holland for the translation. Watch the video here.

‘Yes, we just formed this past December 2012 and are just getting started. We’ve rehomed one dog so far and have a Galgo currently in fostercare. I need to get both of them up on the website and I will use your other suggestions, too as we work on our content! (I suggested when you formed, which shelters in Spain you support, news stories, rehoming stories, what donations are used for.)
