  • Galgo Happy, recovering from a bad case of mange

    ‘Happy’ arrived earlier this month at 112carlotagalgos with a very serious case of mange – no hair, swollen legs, open sores and scabs on his body. He was in so much pain and so sore he couldn’t even lie down. His vet fees are mounting up but as you can see from this video, he is improving.   • Accommodation in Valladolid – here’s the best place

    Scooby Valladolid puppy 250 10 2013This teeny weeny galgo puppy, only 6 weeks old was found abandoned in Valladolid. He, it´s a little boy, was totally alone in a filthy barn, full of shit and other garbage, no food and no water, very skinny and hungry as a horse, covered in fleas and without a clean place or a soft blanket to sleep on. Now he is in the Scooby Valladolid Residencia and if he survives, Cobie and team will try to help him grow into a big, strong healthy and happy sofa galgo! Unbelievable – how he came to be there. Thank goodness he is safe!

  • Pro-Galgo – another galgo saved

    Mo Swatek Marek 2 170Another story of heartbreak for a little galgo, found in a 5m deep canyon. Rescuers had to climb down to rescue him and get him to safety. He had a bad hind leg fracture, open wound full of maggots, severe gangrene setting in. There was no chance to save his leg, it had to be amputated. He is now recovering slowly, his liver was also damaged due to the severe infection in his leg.

    He has been named Marek.

  • Update on Polar – Clinic with Caroline Ingraham, Zoopharmacognosy

    Caroline Ingraham 1 250 15 10 2013Today Polar and I attended a day clinic with Caroline Ingraham – check her website here to discover the incredible work she does, including with the RSPCA and other animal welfare organisations in the UK as well as one or two Spanish vets.

    Her stay in our area of France included visiting farm animals and an equestrian livery yard. Today the subject was dogs. I’d been invited to take Polar along because of his disability. There were two other dogs present, French rescued dogs – one a little hunting dog like a beagle without a tail who had been very badly beaten, with no confidence atall, and the other a labrador x who had spent his early years on a short chain, forgotten about, who had jealousy problems.

    So we had 3 dogs with very different problems.

  • Portugal Dog Rescue – traumatised galgo Duke urgently needs your help

    Portugal Dog Rescue Duke 250 10 2013Regular readers will remember the story of Estrela, the galga in Portugal, starving, sick with pneumonia, feeding 3 puppies. Teresa Sousa and her team eventually persuaded the hunter to let them have Estrela and the pups, who regained their health and adopted. Estrela found a wonderful forever home in the UK.

    Now the hunter has given Teresa Estrela’s brother who they have named Duke. Duke too is sick and traumatised. Since rescuing him, Teresa has had more dogs dumped on her and so they do not have the space nor the time to give Duke the time and space needed to heal him. Ines explains his story and their appeal for him.

  • Happy ending for an Argentinian galgo

    Recently a teacher in New Mexico contacted me about my book on the Spanish Galgo as she wishes to use it with her class of children. She herself has a galgo and you can read the story of it’s rescue and rehoming here. I’ve asked for some photos.

Although the hunting season with galgos does not start on the same day in the whole of Spain, we´re just a few weeks from a new season full of suffering, abandonment, pain and death…! So therefore again this very emotional video!! How many years more??!!

  • New Galgos in Scooby Valladolid – adopt a galgo

    Scooby Gustavo Lima 190 9 2013These lovely galgos are with Scooby Residencia Valladolid, hoping to find forever homes. These 2 beauties were rescued at the beginning of the week by Scooby from the perrera provincial in Valladolid. Taken there by their owner because they were not good for hunting, he said. It´s the same old song from the hunters, but happily these two are very good for sofa dogs. They are 2 boys, gorgeous, very sweet, not afraid. Lima has the white face and chest, Gustavo is the other one. Will make wonderful pets.

    This is Tigressa. She’s an older girl, 7 years old, and been used as a breeding machine. She’s kind and gentle and has a lot of love to give. Towards the end of the video you can hear Cobie describing her character.

    And this is Cali, a young galgo mix, under 2 years old. He was rescued from the campo, very afraid. You can see his is still nervous of people but gains in confidence and trust every day.
