  • The hung galgos of Fuensilada, Toledo – update on the court case

Baas Galgo court case poster 190 7 2013You may remember the case of the two galgos in Toledo who had been hung by their owner. Their microchips had not been removed and he was traced. Associacion Baas Galgo took him to court. Here is the update from Sandra Baas.

‘On October 9th, a court trial will take place at Juzgado n1 de lo Penal de Toledo for the man who murdered his two galgos by ways of hanging. Two years ago, the corpses of the two young dogs (one was 22 months old, the other was 5 years old) were found in the Fuensalida, Toledo location. The dogs had been hung and killed. One of the dogs, had a microchip which identified their owner, who confessed to the massacre and told the judge that he was not aware that hanging his dogs was considered illegal and that he did so because they were deemed “ineffective” since they were not successful hunting dogs.

  • 3 days to go – Why David’s jumping out of an aeroplane!

David and dogs in meadowWHY am I jumping out of an aeroplane over the sea? I’ll tell you why………

I’ve loved dogs for as long as I can remember. My love of Greyhounds, and subsequently Levriers and Galgos started in England when an abandoned greyhound turned up at our home early one morning, and never left.

I’m passionate about anything to do with dogs and their welfare, and when my wife Beryl started “Galgo News” in November 2007, and later “Podenco Post” I was happy to support her work any way I could. Inevitably my support was largely passive as she built a vast network of global contacts trying to make a difference to the plight of the poor dogs of Spain.

  • Spanish Galgo puppy Silencio – Galgos del Sur, Cordoba, to the rescue

Galgos del Sur galguito head 250 7 2013This poor little soul is with Galgos del Sur. Here is his story.

‘We were given notice that a galguito was under a car in a marginal area of Cordoba. When we got there, the galguito was losing fluids from many parts of his body and we carried him to our car and went directly to the vet hospital.

His diagnosis is not serious, but the care and hospitalization he needs will be expensive. His body is full of all kinds of parasites, has anaplasma, low hematocrit, has almost no power to move and is malnourished and dehydrated. We’ve called him Silence, because he crawled under the car to die in silence. The photos say it all.

  • Cordoba & Valencia – galgos and podencos rescued

Cordoba 11 galgos 2 250Two stories of more galgos saved – the first one is 11 galgos in Cordoba. The hunter was taken very ill and hospitalised and an appeal went out to help the galgos. Galgos del Sol took 2 and several small associations stepped in to help. The galgos are all ok.

The second story is about a dozen or so galgos, podencos and other dogs including puppies abandoned in an empty swimming pool! You can see how deep it is by looking at the male volunteer with a couple of the dogs. It is believed they were left there by gitanos. They have all been rescued by Apadac association in Callosa de Segura, Valencia region. You can see more photos on their website.

  • Support the small associations – they need help too

Charl Harley eye 250All animal rescue associations in Spain do an amazing job, some of them are lucky enough to have hundreds of supporters to raise funds for their work. Which sadly often pushes out the small associations who lurch from month to month trying to pay feed and vet bills. You’ll know from previous posts on Galgo News that Charl and 112carlotagalgos has worked tirelessly for many years – longer than many larger associations – to raise awareness of the plight of the galgos and podencos. You can read more about the dogs here.

She now has some seriously ill galgos in her care, and the vet bills are mounting up as we speak.
