  • Pepis Refuge, Seville – now puppy Polar needs your help

Pepis Refuge pup 250 4 2013It’s been a nightmare few months for Jane and Alan at Pepis Refuge, Seville. Rain and more rain, mud and more mud, loss of Internet. Now at least they are connected to the rest of the world again. Below are a couple of photos of some of the galgos which were dumped or arrived at the refuge during this time. And this is the story of the little chap in this photo.

‘This is Polar,he was left at the refuge three weeks ago and has a deformed back leg.He saw the bone specialist on Tuesday and we were told that his leg was broken when he was a tiny baby and, as he has grown, the leg has become twisted above and below his knee and he will need to have several operations to correct the deformity. We were told that if the leg is not tended too soon,as he grows the leg will not. I will post the xray taken when I receive them.’

  • 4th April 2013 – Happy Belated Birthday DutchGalgoLobby

Apologies that this news is a little late. I’m currently in the UK for a funeral and flat clearing and have restricted access to a computer.

Happy 2nd Birthday DutchGalgoLobby on 4th April 2013

On April 4th, DutchGalgoLobby celebrates her 2nd birthday. In her relatively short existence, DutchGalgoLobby has achieved quite a lot. Dutch Politics are now well aware of the Galgo mistreatment in Spain and one of the parties even set up a resolution to ask the Dutch government to take action. Regretfully this resolution did not get enough votes to pass because they still think it is an internal Spanish problem, to be solved by Spain. (Subsidiarity principle)

Therefore we approached the European Parliament which is in progress but takes time. European parliament is rather sluggish!

  • Two lucky galgas – Portuguese Estrela and Spanish Fallera

Two nice stories – Many of you responded to the appeal to fund food and medical care for Estrela, a galga owned by an alcoholic Portuguese hunter, who had 3 puppies which he was intending to drown. Thanks to the efforts of Teresa Sousa and her team, Estrela was rescued, along with the puppies. One of the ladies who contributed towards the fees for Estrela has been accepted for her forever Mom. Last week Estrela arrived at my home for a temporary stay en route for the UK.

And the story of Fallera, a beautiful white galga which an old man used to walk past the Scooby Residencia Valladolid. He lived in an apartment and kept the galga in a garage. Cobie of Scooby eventually managed to persuade the old man to give Fallera to Scooby and she was recently rehomed in Italy.

  • ‘Training’ galgos from motorised vehicles – Andalusian Minister of Justice comments

In a hearing of the parliamentary commission of the Andalusian government, Emilio de Llera Suárez-Bárcena, minster of Justice and Interior Affairs, told the commission that they would not draft a regulation for the training of galgos with motor vehicles and nor did they ask the Veterinary Department of the University of Cordoba to study this matter. He responded to a question asked by the IU-GREENSdeputy, Alba María Doblas Miranda.

On a personal note, the minister added that he is absolutely against the training of galgos with motor vehicles. “I do not know if it is damaging to the galgos, I am not a vet. But I find the image of this training repugnant and it hurts my feelings”. Read the story here.
