The Germans rescue many Galgos, however when I moved to Germany I was pretty shocked to hear what it costs for people living in Germany when they give “room for one more”.
In Germany if you have a dog, you pay a luxury tax (!) for owning the dog.
Where I live the dog tax is told to be “very reasonable”. It is 60 EUR for the first dog, and it increases for each further dog.
You pay 120 EUR for the second dog and if I have “room for one more”, well, the 3rd dog will be taxed for 180 EUR a year. Also 180.-/dog/year !!!
Ant they call it relatively LOW dog tax! Low in comparison to some other municipalities where your first dog is taxed nearly 200.- EUR (and the second even much more).
Dogs of so called listed breeds are taxed for up to 1400.- a year I heard.
I was shocked to hear this as ALL the Germans I know adopted their dog from a pound or from a rescue group.
ALL OF THEM!!!
Honestly, I can not bring all the abandoned, often crippled, old and/or sick dogs they rescue from death together with “luxury” but these people are taxed for the “luxury” indeed!
In addition to this, German residents do NOT necessarily get ANYTHING for paying the abovementioned amount, because, remember, it is a LUXURY tax!
Therefore they do not get a dog park for it, so our town has NO dog park or similar, I pay for my two galgos and get nothing for my money.
In several towns the dog tax was recently increased because – and the town authorities told it openly – the towns need more $$$.
I know of a town that increased the dog tax by approx. 100 EUR and locals who went to court because of this, they lost.
The biggest problem is that with “one more” dog the tax for the next dog will be much higher. It is told to be some kind of regulatory measure, they want to prevent animal hoarding, blah blah blah.
However, I do not think, that 2 or 3 dogs are already animal hoarding and of course the result is that a rich mafia boss can easily have whatever number of dogs, but any average person thinks twice about getting a second or even a third dog.
As galgo dogs LOVE each other’s company, it would be great when the German government would finally appreciate all the good rescue work that have been carried out by their own subjects and would stop taxing the dog owners for their rescued dogs (for their “luxury goods”).
Even if you adopt your dog from the local rescue, even then only some of the municipalities exempt you from paying the dog tax – for only one year.
Dog breeders pay no dog tax in Germany. I suppose for them it is no luxury to keep a dog, or so the authorities think.
Sad state of affairs – I do think that people who have already one galgo would happily adopt more but when you get ripped off in this manner then you think about it twice.
Bad for the galgos… especially for them as most of them love the company of other dogs in the household.

tunde all what i read above its disgusting all people are trying to do is save these beutiful dogs and give them a deserving life ye another way of making money it all makes me sick the animals are always last on the list for protection and have i understood correct that on top of paying the initial fee you pay every year after that there is a long long way to go in every country for the rights of animals for what ever reason have you tried going on the care 2 web site maybe you could get a petition going to petition the german government over this tax because after all the people with dogs or any animal need all the pennies they can get for vets bills not pay it out to the country in tax its horrid whats going on around the world for these poor animals some parts of asia are going round with a wire pole once they get the dogs they inject and the poor souls die in pain there is just no need for this sort of torture one little boy returned from school and found his poor dog had been taken out the house and killed they think thats going to cure everything

Hi Jenny, the German government could tax the stock market transactions, for example. Or have more police officers on the streets as there are enough speeders to take a nice photo of and then to pay a nice fat penalty…
All that would be fairer and the municipalities could get MUCH MORE MONEY in this way!
Honestly, especially German individuals rescue SO MANY dogs and cats, when they can then from the local pound, otherwise from abroad. They help so much in this way!
It has NOTHING to do with luxury. It is kindness and pity and yes, of course these people love pets.

Hi Jenny, yes, it is so:
1st dog 60.- EUR / year
2nd dog 120.- EUR / year
3rd dog 180.- EUR / year
in our area and it is considered relatively cheap in comparison to other cities in the area.
Someone sued the German government because of the luxury dog tax in Strasbourg but I heard that some important documents disappeared from the court (strange enough) so somehow the whole issue stranded.
