Odile Brochot, president of Lévriers sans frontières, and 6 French volunteers just returned from a rescue trip to Spain. They went to a perrera to save some dogs from certain death there, took their rescued dogs back to Fondation Benjamin Mehnert, went to a galguero hideaway, saved some dogs there and then went to Scooby Medina where they also took some dogs to be taken back to France to be adopted out.
At the perrera, they saw an angel and met the devil.
Two nice stories – Many of you responded to the appeal to fund food and medical care for Estrela, a galga owned by an alcoholic Portuguese hunter, who had 3 puppies which he was intending to drown. Thanks to the efforts of Teresa Sousa and her team, Estrela was rescued, along with the puppies. One of the ladies who contributed towards the fees for Estrela has been accepted for her forever Mom. Last week Estrela arrived at my home for a temporary stay en route for the UK.
And the story of Fallera, a beautiful white galga which an old man used to walk past the Scooby Residencia Valladolid. He lived in an apartment and kept the galga in a garage. Cobie of Scooby eventually managed to persuade the old man to give Fallera to Scooby and she was recently rehomed in Italy.
The daffodils are out, buds on the lilac tree, new shoots on the honeysuckle – Spring is on its way where I live in France. If you are thinking holidays – but as with so many people – including me – can’t afford to pay a lot, think about going to Spain and staying with a refuge or on a dog-lovers holiday and help the volunteers with the rescued dogs. What could be more enjoyable and more rewarding?!
Think about going to Scooby, they have hundreds and hundreds of dogs, plus other animals. Go and stay for a week or two and join the team. Contact Scooby. You will remember the appeal to save the Cuenca refuge being changed back into a perrera. Scooby have taken 27 galgos from there. They arrived on January 10th.
Cristina and Simonetta, an Italian volunteer, left at 6 in the morning to get the dogs to Scooby. So it was a double women power transport and it worked very well!

Not all galgueros are complete bastards – like the one who deliberately left galga Gala with two broken legs out in the campo in Andalucia – to starve to death in great pain. Manolo was left with Scooby Residencia Valladolid. Here Cobie tells his tale.
MANOLO was left behind in the residencia because he was ‘no good for hunting’, said the galguero. I´m sure the galguero was no good for the dog because every galgo is a champion! Manolo is very lucky because now he can start a better and happy life with a caring family who will love him dearly because he is young, 2 and a half years old, very handsome, playful, super sweet and nice, has no fear and loves all other dogs and, even more, loves people. Two pieces of news, which came up whilst I was stuck in the UK with hardly any computer contact.
Gala is a beautiful young galga found in a field in Andalucia with two deliberately badly broken legs – the left front and the left back – so she could not possibly get up and walk anywhere. Left by some bastard Spanish hunter to die a long and lingering and painful death. Luckily she was discovered and El Amparo took her to their vet where their vet operated on her to pin her legs back together again. Here are some before photos, and an incredible after video where she is walking with her legs splinted.
Two badly injured galgos dumped in a perrera, and taken in by 112carlota galgos – Ebro, the more sick of the two – is on the road to recovery; both his broken front legs are now in pins and he is being nursed at the finca.
Jade – after a promising start, became seriously ill last week and the vet and Charl made the ultimate decision yesterday. RIP Jade.
As one door closes, another one opens for Carly, saved from being killed last week and arriving at the finca today.
Scooby Medina have taken in Gala, a black and white galga abandoned in Andalucia – both front legs so badly broken that the bones were sticking out.
After a tragic accident, El Galgo Senior association in Alicante lost their president Pat. Scooby have stepped in to take over 100 galgos from their shelter. Is anyone counting how many galgos have been saved by Scooby? Thee are over 600 animals at their centre in Medina del Campo, plus dozens more at the kennels in Valladolid. And now the Scooby team have been helping Pilar at Cuenca – too many galgos for the space there – read the amazing story of the saving of over 40 galgos and a podenco.
Please remember Scooby this Christmas – the team won’t have a day off – the dogs need cleaning and feeding and exercising, medication etc. And if you are kind enough to donate to them, please don’t be upset if you don’t get a personal ‘thank you’.
