  • Galgo brother & sister Sam and Sallie – waiting at 112carlotagalgos for a forever home together

Sallie & Sam 1 250Charl writes. Introducing Sam and Sallie. So young in age and trashed away. Galgo pups kept in the darkness of a shed and forgotten about … left to fend for themselves.
Just mere babies at best they scavenge the ground in the dark.. barking till hoarse Sam lost his voice. “Someone.. anyone can you feed us?”

The day came when they were remembered and thrown over the fence of my friend’s refuge. The norm here… and then they become prey to be robbed. So galgos from Maria head to us for safety.

  • Support the small associations – they need help too

Charl Harley eye 250All animal rescue associations in Spain do an amazing job, some of them are lucky enough to have hundreds of supporters to raise funds for their work. Which sadly often pushes out the small associations who lurch from month to month trying to pay feed and vet bills. You’ll know from previous posts on Galgo News that Charl and 112carlotagalgos has worked tirelessly for many years – longer than many larger associations – to raise awareness of the plight of the galgos and podencos. You can read more about the dogs here.

She now has some seriously ill galgos in her care, and the vet bills are mounting up as we speak.

  • Martin Usborne, photographer and author, visits the galgos of Malaga

Charl Carly perrera 250 1 2013Last summer I received the following email.

‘My name is Martin Usborne. I am a dog lover and professional photographer from London. I’ve recently decided to take a year out from earning to help animals, in particular dogs, and intend to write a book about my experience. I’ve just come back from India where I’ve been working with stray dogs. I want to ask the question: what happens if you drop everything and decide to follow your heart?

I can’t get the horrible pictures of the poor rejected galgos out of my head and wanted to double check if there was anything I could do as I believe January is the time of year when they suffer most. If you think I might be able to visit Spain on a short trip and write about the issue and if possible participate in some hands on rescue please let me know.’

  • The Galguero and his hounds – the story of of two galgos

Charl Clio 2 250 12 2012Another piece of emotive writing from Charl del Rio of 112carlotagalgos, this time about two new arrivals at the shelter in December.

‘The count down is done and the galgos are free, chasing the chase of the hare who runs free. Whoever said that this was a sport, for a sport is something that two should play, who asked the hare if he wanted to die today?

It’s here that these galgueros walk back empty handed, not all but some who have decided that their galgos just don’t make the grade. Some having traded out, thinking others have beter dogs. A galgo is flesh at the end of the day to these galgueros, not a living creature who has feelings, a concept which only they have as consolation to such cruelty.

  • Galga baby Jessica – hoping for a forever home for Christmas

Jessica Charl Dioni crop 200 20 10 2012Catching up on news about galgos and podencos, after being on holiday for a week with my son and family. Starting off with this delightful little lady, Jessie. She’s a galgo puppy in the safe hands of 112carlotagalgos in Malaga, waiting for her forever family. Read her story here. (This pic was when she was rescued, she’s grown some more now)

It’s a hard life for the galgos, as they continue to be dumped in the perreras for killing…so many details coming in that I can’t keep up with them, but luckily many people are publicising them on Save the Galgo on Facebook. And the news gets worse, as a couple of leading lights in galgo rescue in Spain have been forced to close their doors…it doesn’t bear thinking about what will happen to the galgos in their areas now.

  • Update Galgo Racing Malaga – more urgent emails to send – please help stop this!

Please everyone, your help is still needed to stop galgo racing in Malaga. 112carlotagalgos and Galgos en Familia are pulling out all the stops. Here’s an update from Charl del Rio.

‘As we know galgos are used as “renta” dogs not pets! Therefore this gets passed off as Cultura Agriculture department. No-one wants to take responsibility to answer. Due to the welfare of the Spanish galgo and the fact that no other carrera de galgo has been held at the hipodromo in Malaga or any other in this area, they are duty bound to give information regards who placed the race there and if there will be permissions to give further races. They need flooding with emails.’

  • Rey, King of the Galgos – needs your help

Rey Charl 250 3 2012112carlotagalgos is a very small family association which concentrates on rescuing and rehabilitating traumatised, sick and injured galgos and podencos. Some months ago we told the story of Rey, abandoned, surviving on virtually nothing, he’d finally collapsed and almost given up the struggle. Some months on, he is doing ok, but a new problem has arisen. Rey needs help! He needs you, we need you! Here’s his story…

Rey came to 112 Carlota Galgos several months ago, found giving up, life had let him down. He lay in the dust with life draining from him,.. down and out. He was seen and rescued. He stayed with his rescuer in Sevilla for a month and along with Polyana joined us at 112 carlota galgos for us to recouperate them and socialise them into family life.

Rey .. seems he has everything against him, he is a black galgo in Spain, he is older and he is a natural hunter. He cannot be scolded for something which has been bred into him, he lived and kept himself alive by hunting. He is a hunter, he will hunt, and yet he will walk by your side like the gentlest galgo you know.
