Sign the petition – the European Commission have to act for Europe!
I’d just like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who reads Galgo News, comments on posts, and joins in the letter writing and petition signing posts which I highlight. Whilst my aim is to highlight the plight of the galgos and podencos, I get emails appealing for help to highlight the stray/abandoned dog problem in other countries which have now joined the EU.
So this is a petition to sign to help one of those countries.

Cadiz Perrera – dogs on death row – they didn’t ask to be born and thrown away
Here are four of the beautiful dogs on death row at Cadiz Perrera. The perrera is full, there is no more space. Besides galgos and podencos, there are even crossed huskies. I never understand how a Husky can live in the heat of the Mediterranean!

Galga Holly – saved and safe – can anyone help home her puppies?
There are so many terrible tales about galgos and other abandoned dogs in Spain, that I have to limit myself to galgos and podencos. This email has just come in from a lady in Spain who has been a supporter of abandoned dogs for many years. The information in the message illustrates just what a terrible time abandoned galgos have.
‘Dear Everyone, I’m writing to all of you in the hope that you will be able to help me by posting pictures on your websites?
John and I found Holly by the side of the road on Christmas day.

Spanish abuse of Animals – the law needs to be enforced – sign the petition quickly
I know this isn’t about a galgo,it is about a donkey, and Refugio El Burrito is the donkey refuge where our friend Charl holds her annual Fiesta de Galgos. Please sign and circulate.
‘Dear friends, we need your help. As you can read from the enclosure, the February 16 we will be present at Villanueva together with the responsible of the Refugio of the Burrito to avoid that a donkey is brutally abused during a cruel village party. Here is the appeal received from the spanish friends of the Refugio del Burrito that we are spreading:
“El Refugio del Burrito will be present at the Pero Palo and so will be also the Italian collegues of the CEDA – Comitato Europeo Difesa Animali ; we ask you to support our petition http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/peropalo/
to enforce the Town Hall to enforce the Law and stop the use of a donkey in this Carnival. We do hope that also other associations from abroad will be present with their representatives, or will at least send their official support to us (info@elrefugiodelbu rrito.com) and / or at the CEDA (info@animalitalia. it).” -
Charl in Malaga – desperately trying to catch a terrified galgo
Charl’s latest update on the white galgo with baler twine round its neck and now an injured hind leg.
14/02/2010 ‘I am frantic about the galgo, more since he has the bailing twine around his neck. I hope he comes back now the workers have gone. Vera who helped out with the galgas brindles… and took the light brown one, the others went to Silvia with a podenco I think, well she lives not too far away, she has gone when I can’t go so the hours are covered, but theres no sign of him in the last few days. Lets keep praying!

EC International Conference on Education & Animal Welfare – 1 & 2 October 2010
I hope many of you have supported my letter writing campaigns to the European Commission. In a letter dated 2nd February 2010, Mmme Andrea Gavinelli, Head of the Unit of Animal Health and Welfare has advised me of the following:
‘In accordance with the objectives of the Community Action Plan on the Protection and Welfare of Animals 2006-2010, the Commission is working continuously in order to increase awareness on animal welfare issues among European citizens. To this effect, the Commission will organise the first International Conference on Education and Animal Welfare on 1 & 2 October 2010.’
I wonder if any of the rescue associations are aware and would like to contact Mme Gavinelli about it. Commission Europeenne, B-1049 Bruxelles, Belgium.
