Hi Folks – just to say that there won’t be any news for a few days, as I’m heading off to Spain today with the rest of the team, to bring back some more galgos and a few podencos, saved from a horrendous death now hunting in Spain is ended.

Tina Solera,one of the galgo rescuers in Spain, has just sent in this story today.
‘This galgo has been wandering now near my village for approx two weeks and I’ve been trying to win her over and had a few attempts at catching her. Today I gave it another go, chicken, pizzas and countless sandwiches later(whatever I could get my hands on.. the pizza came from 3 teengaers relaxing and eating in the park).

The hunting season has come to an end and 90 galgos were left at the shelter by their owners. As usual if you do not accept them they kill them.
With a huge effort we try to safe as many lives as possible but the shelter is packed and we can not accept any more galgos, we need help to find forever homes urgently
The face of Viki says it all. She is on her own and very unhappy in the Huesca perrera, where the winter is long and cold. She is about 5 years old. Ref E-7-6

I’ve just found this piece of news on Baas Galgo. Using Google translate, it seems to refer to Seprona arresting some more people for illegal trafficking in galgos. Please could someone bi-lingual English/Spanish confirm the report for me.

SARA Lanzarote has some good news about 3 podencos finding homes, but there are dozens more. Please support them.
‘In November 2009, Sara Animal Shelter, Lanzarote prepared and sent to the UK four Podencos for adoption. This was the first time they have attempted this due to the quarantine laws in the UK. Rick and Lesley Beauchamp, of Express Recruitment in Nottingham, who made Sara their chosen charity, collected the dogs off the plane in Germany and have been fostering them whilst homes were found.
We are delighted to report that three of the four have now found forever homes.
Baroness Thyssen, another tireless campaigner for helping the galgos, recently delivered a perition to the Spanish Government with 23,000 signatures collected by FEBA, Spanish Federation of Animal Welfare. Story here on Baas Galgo

After being reported by his neighbours for badly beating his dog, a hunter has been arrested by Seprona and charged with animal cruelty and will received a prison sentence of between 3 -12 months.
