Come many to join us on April 11, 2010 at 13:30 at the carpark of l’ Abbey of Maredsous for a canine ballade in company of the greyhound gang. You will be able to discover very beautiful places located around our village and this on a course of approximately 7 km. Maredsous is in Belgium, between Dinant and Namur.
At the end of the ballade a glass of wine and a shield will be given to you in order to know more; also a boutique stall so you can learn about our association.
Please email lydia.toussaint@skynet.be
Thank you in advance
Estrella is looking for a forever home. She was diagnosed with Ehrlichia at the beginning of January, a very low reading, but, for whatever reason, treatment was never commenced, even when she went to her foster home. The only ‘symptom’ she shows, if one can call it a symptom, is weight loss, but that could also be due to the fact that they don’t bother to feed the dogs in the killing station. The only reason she was not killed is because someone had shown an interest in her.
A couple of days ago I posted about our friend Charl in Malaga desperately trying to rescue a terrified galgo with a cord round his neck. This is the latest news from her.
‘I have been out the past few days and evenings pacing looking for the white galgo. He keeps coming back to the same location, however there are workmen fumigating and he has been put off. It appears that they are fumigating the palm trees so the liquid goes directly into the tree. I hope that is all they are doing since any other fumigation is dangerous for our galgo.
Since Christmas, we’ve had a lot of snow and freezing conditions in our part of France, so I was praying we wouldn’t encounter the same problems as we prepared for our journey to Madrid to bring home our cargo of rescued galgos.
Suzette is a new volunteer to the team, and she has a big van, so I was looking forward to having a lot of dogs for company on the return journey. She had done an absolutely amazing job of collecting donations for the poor shelters which L’Europe de Levriers (EDL) helps, and from which it takes the galgos for rehoming in France. If I tell you that, by the time we reached the French border, the van was absolutely full to the roof, it is no word of a lie!
Rotaguau Perrera (dog pound) has now raised its charges for saving a dog from there.
Bearing in mind the number of hunters who are now dumping their galgos at perreras, this could be the cost to an association for saving EACH dog
72 euros for MRW
50 euros to the vet
40 euros more to the vet for ‘protective’ – not sure what that is
30 euros to take the dog from the perrera to MRW (animal transport company)
TOTAL – 152 euros to save each dog.
For those of you who live far afield and have not visited Spain, or for those of you who have visited Southern Spain in search of sun, sangria and sea, this is a story of the REAL Spain.
Driving back from Spain to France along the E05 towards San Sebastien, we stopped off at a petrol/parking/grill centre, literally just at the side of the motorway. The parking was busy with cars and a few lorries.
We parked close to a car where there were 4/5 20-somethings – rasta hair, revolting low-slung jeans (who the devil wants to look at their pink bum cheeks!) – and tatty clothes.
Remember the Andrex advert and the golden labrador puppies? Well, imagine one of those but with long curly fluffy hair, BUT THE SAME SMALL SIZE.
Just received an email from that marvellous campaigner for galgos Charl – please pray she catches him.
Sorry, this was the first email which came whilst I was in Spain.
‘I just got back from going to Ikea and a white galgo with bailing twine wrapped round his neck crossed my path. I shot out of the car and followed him to where he goes. Very similar to the white sarna galga but very thin and sad. He was hard to follow, his fear of himself, solitary.
Dear friends,
In 2009 we held the first Scooby North America Auction and raised enough money to help install a much-needed tile floor in the Hospital and Surgery Center at Scooby Animal Refuge in Medina del Campo, Spain. Our goal for 2010 is to build as many brick shelters as possible in the paddocks to help protect the animals from the elements, but we can only do it through your generosity.
How can you help?
