• Cordoba flooded out – Villa del Rio refuge desperate for help

Cordoba is a disaster area – terrible floods, people having to leave their homes, and hundreds of dogs imprisoned in the Villa del Rio refuge – this is the one where the hunters left 90 galgos a couple of weeks ago. Here’s a news link about it, in Spanish, but just use a translator for the page

Sandra Baas will send news updates as they come in.

  • Huesca perrera – a man who cares about his dogs – can you help these?

Huesca galgo 1 02 2010 250 Jose is at the perrera in Huesca. He cares about his dogs and the conditions in which they live – sadly not all perreras are like this. Hunting for hares, pigs and boars has finished and he is inundated with dumped dogs! Here are 4 galgos and 2 podenco andaluz which Jose is desperately trying to get out of the perrera – look how beautiful the galgos are, one looks just a puppy.

  • Colate – Galgo happy in his French home – unlike his previous Spanish home

Colate and friend 2010 350 One of the first galgos we fostered was called Colate – we called him Chocolate Chip Dog – he was the most beautiful chocolate colour. Like my Sahara (only 18 months old when I got her) he had a grey face, and he was only 4 years old. This is a photo of him with his mate – he’s the one on the right. Great to see him looking so well.

  • Abandoned dogs in Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Romania, the Balkans, Greece…..

Sheriff Jo of Arizona 2010 300 This has been sent to me by one of my American readers. She suggested it might be an idea for the Spanish government, and regional councils, to take on board – so that the volunteers who work so hard in the refuges and shelters full of abandoned dogs – galgos especially – could get a load of free help.

It is an amusing read, after the appeals and horror reports posted recently, but I think we should import the ideas to pretty well every European country!

Subject: SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!

You all remember Sheriff Joe Arpaio ofArizona , who painted
the jail cells pink and made the inmates wear pink prison garb.
    Well………

Galga estepona 02 2010 300 This poor galga is in Estepona. A lady has been feeding her for 6 weeks, but cannot get near her, she is so terrified, and looks as though she has a wound on her back.

Can anyone help catch her? Charl is going to check her out, but will need help. Email Charl if you can help. comdelrio@hotmail.com

  • Attn. a petition to the EU requesting help to protect animals

At an Offtopic section of an spanish forum (“Save a life” we thought it was a good idea to beg you to help us collaborate to gather one million signatures, needed to ask the European Commission to introduce a law to protect all animals in the European Union member states against animal abuse and maltreat in Europe.

This is the text of the petition, originally written in French:
Author of the petition: GALGOS FRANCE (Greyhounds France)

For the attention of the European Parliament Commission:

Thanks to the new right to the citizen’s initiative, one million citizens from all over the different member states can now ask the Commission for the presentation of new proposals.

  • All in a day’s work in a perrera in Spain!

Mass of dead dogs 1 250 At the end of the day in a perrera in Spain – whilst the method of euthanasia was probably the cheapest, and painful, at least they will not have to suffer any more.

And this isn’t the fate of just Spain’s abandoned dogs – it is the fate of thousands of dogs throughout Europe, including Croatia, Turkey, Serbia, Romania. I am receiving appeals to post petitions about this on Galgo News, but I can’t help them all – this journal is chiefly about the galgos and podencos.

THe European Commission and individual member states HAVE to deal with the problem at source, which is strict control of breeding of all dogs, and a mass neutering programme.

The Gift of Life is the greatest gift, and the gift of the love of a dog is second – it is unconditional, no holds barred, whatever is done to it.

  • Galgos on death row at Lucena perrera, Cordoba – only a week to go

  • ‘Here in this house’ – Thank You from an adopted dog

Sahara sleeping in sun 300 A beautiful piece of poetry received today – a beautiful animated drawing accompanied it, but that is copyrighted, so I’ve put my own pic here.

Here in this house… I will never know the loneliness I hear in the barks
of the other dogs ‘out there’.

I can sleep soundly, assured that when I
wake, my world will not have changed. I will never know hunger, or the fear of
not knowing if I’ll eat. I will not shiver in the cold, or grow weary from
the heat. I will feel the sun’s heat, and the rain’s coolness, and be
allowed to smell all that can reach my nose.

  • 22nd February, Madrid – Animal Rights Protest – Please attend if possible

PROTEST ON 22ND FEBUARY IN MADRID FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS.

I haven’t attached the photos because they are really sickening and I am sensitive to the fact that, whilst most people are aware of the horrors perpetrated on animals in Spain, explicit pictures can be found on other websites
