Cristal – covered in mange, fleas, scared, saved from life on the streets of Salamanca
Here are photos of the last case rescued, she is called Cristal. she has been begging on the outskirts of Salamanca almost 2 months, until the other day we managed to rescue her and we believe it was only because of her sheer exhaustion that we did.
She is 2 years old and small in size. As you can see she is covered with mange, and there wasn’t any room for another flea to fit on her body. She is scared but we dont doubt in time she will become more caring. She is scared when you try to come close to her, but if you do manage slowly getting closer to her and soothing her, stroking her gently, she puts her tail between her legs but does relax.

PAWS refuge – volunteering to help the podencos in Almeria

I had discovered PAWS through a website, Sighthound Welfare, asking for volunteers. I love dogs and couldn’t wait to go. After enquiring, I booked my flight with Monarch, for the 27th June in February! Unfortunately I could only go for a week due to work commitments, but will have to go for longer next time as this is no where near enough time.

Parchito – burnt alive, abandoned on the streets near Seville to die
This news is just in from Charl. Don’t turn away, please.
A few days ago GRIN received information about a Galgo abandoned on the streets in Puebla de Cazalla, Sevilla. The pictures are shocking, but we cannot turn our faces from what this poor creature has endured.
The rescue of this poor boy began with a lady named Macarena who spotted him in this village. The word went out and various rescuers, Lydia, Salva, Jero, MaCarmen and Maca got together and easily caught him due to his weakened and emaciated state.
Our friend Silvia in Valencia was informed and was the first to offer to bring him across Spain from Sevilla to Valencia to her vet. She began the urgent transportation link via private transports because of his delicate state of being. On Friday Aug. 7th Parchito arrived in Valencia and is safe now.

Catalan Galguerros Apologise – You Must Be Joking! Sign the Petition.
This on-line petition request people to sign in protest about the Catalan hunters who have had the cheek to publicise a so called ‘apology’ to schools for the horrors they commit against galgos every year. The video show an under-cover reporter interviewing one of them. Do you know what I think would be a good idea – to cut off their hands, and then hang them by their genitalia, just like they do to galgos by the neck!

SARA Lanzarote and their animal neutering scheme
A team of 7 vets from the Stitching Medogs Foundation in Holland visited Lanzarote and the SARA Shelter to help with their neutering campaign. During their 2-week stay, they neutered 86 animals and the SARA staff neutered 34 themselves. You can read about it on their website, click on News.

Law to Protect domestic animals in Spain – but probably not galgos!

Prison sentence for abandoning or abusing an animal !
New laws just passed in Spain now make it a criminal offence to abandon or mistreat an animal.
Article 337 says “Those that ill-treat domestic animals with cruelty, causing the death or provoking injuries that produce serious physical damage will be punished by a sentence of prison from three months to one year”

URGENT SOS – ANIMALS DYING IN ISORA – HELP GET THEM OUT

This is a plea for help for animals in a finca in Isora there are several animals dying of heat and dehydration!!!! 20 have been taken by the person trying to get the animals out of there but many are left and they cannot take them all. If you can help call the number below, this is URGENT!

Podenco in Cordoba/Malaga area urgently needs help
Can anyone help Kerry and her podenco Spesh, an urgent solution needs to be found for helping them find a new home for him. This is their story.
‘I thought I would send you my story in case you could help or knew anyone who might want to adopt a podenco.
There is a quite a story behind him (as I am sure there is with most rescue dogs) but firstly, the basics facts are; he is a 5yr old castrated male with his recently acquired passport for travel and entry into the UK and is currently housed near Iznajar on the Cordoba/Malaga borders.
‘Spesh’ was one of a litter of 8 which we hand-reared when his stray Mum was to ill to feed them at 5 days old.

Introducing the Sloughi – another amazing sighthound
Through my passion for greyhounds and Spanish galgos, I have learnt about other more unusual breeds of sighthounds, where I have been asked if I can help find new homes. Last year it was the Azawakh, this year it is the Sloughi.
Caroline Mathews of Sloughi Rescue in the UK explains how she got involved with the breed.
‘My first rescue Sloughi, Oscar, came to me from a shelter in the UK in 1999. I didnt know about Sloughis at that time and thought that I had a rather unique and beautiful looking Lurcher. A couple of years later I was introduced to the breed and a true love affair was started.
