    TELMA 250Telma is a small 4 yr old galgo who was adopted by a family in France 18 months ago. Unfortunately the couple separated and Telma has been in foster since.   • Podencos – Travelling to the UK by Personal Chauffeur

    Vicki Thomas Leon and Dolly 250Vicki Thomas used to live in Spain but has now returned to the UK. She left behind her podenco/labrador Leon until his pet passport was in order for him to join them. She decided to bring him back from southern Spain by car, and to adopt another podenco to take back to the UK at the same time. She contacted me through Galgo News and I was able to give her the names of 2 associations in Spain who were likely to have podencos with a pet passport for the UK.

    Vicki tells the story of her adventure.

    Leon was found along with his 7 brothers and sisters dumped in a rubbish bin in La Cala, Mijas. They were a couple of days old and were suffering from chemical burns but had managed to fight their way through the rubbish so that they could be heard from the street.

  • SARA Lanzarote – Podencos with passports for the UK – Adopt one

    Cristina 2 (SARA shelter) 250News just in from Lynne, one of the volunteers working tirelessly on Lanzarote for the SARA shelter.

    “The vet’s arrival is drawing near and we think we have everything prepared. All the medications are ordered, accommodation and hire cars sorted, volunteer helpers are arranged …… so looking good. We hope to have every animal in the shelter neutered by the time they leave and we can even do some of the feral street cats to help with the massive overpopulation on the island.

  • Helping Scooby Medina help the lost dogs of Spain

    Pablo, volunteer at Scooby Medina 0309 300Meet Pablo, one of the volunteers with Scooby Medina. Pablo lives in Valladolid, where he is a police officer. In his spare time, his hobby is to train dogs will all kinds of behaviour problems.

    Last year he adopted a black Scooby-Cocker Spaniel with a foot problem. Most recently he and his girlfriend adopted the Scooby-Setter Isabella.

    Pablo also helps find foster homes for some of the Scooby puppies, giving them the opportunity to start their lives in a ‘real home’.

  • Court confiscates 67 dogs in Spain, read all about it!

    Galgos chained in the dark 0309Earlier this month, March 2009, dozens of dogs were transported more than 600km from El Cuervo, Sille, to the Scooby Medina at Valladolid.

    Thanks to a court order which allowed access to the farm where they were kept in the most unbelievable conditions, these dogs are now in safe hands.

    Some weighted only 6 or 7 kilos when they should have weighted between 25-30. Some had to be euthanased at the farm, some may still not survive, and it will take a lot of time and patience to prepare them for possible adoption abroad.

    Levriers-en-Danger also assisted in the rescue.

  • Database of the Spanish Killing Compounds! Write and Protest!

    And the horrors continue. The Bright Eyes Society has printed a database of the worst Spanish municipal and private dog pounds under contract by town halls and pseudo societies of protection of animals which act as paid dog and cat slaughter houses for the municipalities. http://www.brighteyes.dk/dataentry/default.asp?id=43&mnu=43

    The authorities generally do not control or supervise the condition of the animals. The public often has no access to the animals. Prepare to be astounded at the length of the list!

    At the end of the list there are two addresses to whom letters of protest can be sent.

    Here is the story of Beatriz Marlasca, another Spanish volunteer who has opened a shop especially for galgos and greyhounds. Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo interviewed her.riz

    My name is Beatriz. For many years, I have worked in the animal protection. Like everyone, doing field work, cleaning, and making desparasitation, cures, using my skills as a Technical Assistant and Veterinary Assistant

    I was always aware of the thousands of animals which were abandoned to their fate or directly delivered to a shelter by their owners, because they bother … the puppy had grown and had no longer so much grace, did not know what to do with the holidays and when I reported that there were dog hotels, they were not willing to bear that expenses, sons, husbands, wives with allergies … they were just a few of the many excuses for leaving your dog or cat.
