The galguerros are not the only heartless dog owners, although they are the worst. Because of the credit crunch and dire exchange rate between GBP and the Euro, many British expats in Spain are now abandoning their pets before they return to the UK. The main culprits are those living in the Costas, and the Adana refuge at Estepona is one place where many of the pets end up.

I’ve just received a letter from Mr Bruce Golding, Prime Minister of Jamaica, advising that ‘The Government has received no request or proposed for and is not considering the granting of permission for the introduction of greyhound racing’.
This is good news for the organisers of the campaign to prevent the introduction of greyhound racing on the island.

Meet Sahara, an 18 month old brindle galga.
She was handed in to a perrera by her galguerro when he had finished with her at the end of the hunting season.
She is a happy confident gal, luckily no signs of mistreatment.
I went down to Madrid to collect her and she has now settled happily into my canine family at my home in France.
It never ceases to amaze me how sadistic some people are. A tale from Ireland came in this week of a greyhound, ears cut off to get rid of the tattoo, tied up in a potatoe sack and thrown in a river.
It struggled so much it got its hind legs out, but couldn’t save itself and its body was washed up on the shore.
And who could harm this beautiful podenca, dumped outside a pet shop with both front legs broken. Valerie Wood of Ibizan Hound Rescue explains.
Back home in France late last night after a 3-day round trip of 1800 kms to Madrid, which included delivering a car full of bedding, dog food, medicines, dog coats, which were very gratefully received by the small refuge, and returning with a car full of 6 galgos and a little podenca! And that was just my car! The other two vehicles were also full of galgos, and we brought back 16 in all.
They included the amazing Paca, very badly injured after being dragged behind a car. With the love and care she has received in her foster home, her injuries are healing well, although her foreleg is still giving cause for concern and will probably need an operation when she is stronger.

No news on Galgo News for the rest of this week, folks. I’m off to Spain today, my car is loaded almost to the roof with donations of bedding,beds and food for the refuge, and on Thursday I collect my new galga. I’ll introduce her when I get back.
I now have Karmel’s ashes which I will scatter in the meadows where she loved to walk.
