Cielo, galga left for dead on the streets of Cordoba, rescued by La Guarida

Cielo2 body Cobie 08 2010 250 It’s now nearing the end of August, soon the Spanish hunting season begins. And there are still galgos suffering and dying, abandoned at the end of the last hunting season.

Here is the story of one of them. It has taken me 2 days to be able to post this story, I was so sickened at the suffering of Cielo and felt for the emotional and physical draining which the volunteers who rescued her must have suffered too.

Written by Nuria Martin from the protectora La Guarida, Cordoba, translated for me by Cobie.

Cielo (heaven) that’s how we called her the short time we lived with her, and the short time we shared her suffering. Her end…..

To see her suffer like that, in her own blood, in agony and sadness…..

Accepting her faith, the disgrace which was her whole life, from the moment she was born until the moment she died, after being touched by everything in this country (Spain), she went with so much dignity…..

Actually she was still a puppy, one year and something, so the vet told us…..

She totally panicked for people, she did not let anyone come near her, like most of all galgos who were treated like that.

She lived on the street near an urbanisation, almost sure she had been stolen, that’s the way it always goes.

And then, they have to get rid of the dogs.

A volunteer aproached her and gave her food and tried to catch her several times, without success, and everytime when someone tried to aproach her, she disappeared…..

It’s crowded here in Cordoba with stray galgos, most of them end up in the perreras, others like her…..

She was pregnant, and with her, her babies were left there, stepped on like a cigarette butt.

Cielo4 hind wound Cobie 08 2010 250 The children from the urbanisation have looked at her and talked about her puppies she left on the street, about her lost blood, afterwards she stumbled to the door to the only person who had helped her, the only one who understood her and the only one she did not fear, but neither was allowed to touch her. There she waited for this person with her destroyed body,

This person now was allowed to aproach her for help.

The last look from this poor thing was for her guardian angel, a thankful look for at least not allowing her to die from starvation.

As best we could, we picked her up, she looked thankfully when already leaving this world…..

In the clinic they did all what was possible for her.

Cielo 5 under leg wound Cobie 08 2010 250 Her paw was completely destroyed, so were her bladder and more internal organs, muscles were left on the street.

She stayed quiet when she was surrounded by all of these people, as if she understood that these people would not make her suffer more than she had already done.

She left more than her pups and her blood on the street, she left a lot more there.

She left there her life which she had given to someone who was not worth it. Her life, her youth, was not that from a happy and innocent puppy. it has not been like that. She lost everything in a world for which she had not chosen herself.

That gives us even more pain in our hearts, because of all the other defenceless ones.

Her last look was for us.

The politicians and hunters who assure that the suffering of all the galgos in Spain is history, that no animals are anylonger mistreated.

They should come to our village, then they can see the truth, they will flip out…..

For the last time, we embraced her crying, overwhelmed with sadness, gave her an injection and now she sleeps forever…..

Sweet Cielo from La Guarida…..’

    Hi
Utterly and completely sickening to think of what
this poor galga suffered, so unnecessarily. She couldnt be caught until
she had been hit and badly injured by a vehicle on the road.
Curses on the bastards who abandoned her to this
fate, including the ones who injured her, and those who walked by without
    caring.
Can you imagine doing something like that
yourself? Im sure4 you wouldnt, and Icertainly
    couldnt.
Thanks for reading GN and for caring.

    Bonjour
You can imagine that it took me two days from
receiving this story to being able to actually look at all the pictures, and
post the story. Cant believe that people just walked by the dog, stepped
over her, lying on the street badly injured like that. And I so feel for
the volunteers who picked her up and took her to the vet – their pain must be
terrible too. How do they live with all this atrocity?
So sorry you have lost your beloved canine friend,
it is never easy losing a member of the family. But at least you can know
that she had a happy life with you. To adopt another, you will probably be
best contacting either Greyhounds In Need – they have galgos with passports
prepared for UK entry, and sometimes Pro-Galgo have one, although at the moment
I think they only have podencos in the UK. At the moment I am fostering a
galga on behalf of a lady in the UK, preparing the pet passport takes 7 months,
so its quite a long process. Have a look at the GIN website, Im sure
they will have a galgo for you.
Let me know how you get on, Im collecting rehoming
    stories.
    And thank you for caring.

You wouldnt believe how many dogs (not just galgos) have entered our refuge this summer. I am shocked and disgusted. The last month has been devastating. I have no idea how Spain plans to tackle this dog abandonment problem.

    Hi Tina
    Its everywhere……….not just Spain,
everywhere. First sign of recession, chuck the animals………….at
least it looks like the RSPCA will prosecute the woman in Coventry, UK,who
threw the cat in the wheelie bin. And so they should, or who else will
throw animals into wheelie bins?! Its why we have to keep on at the EU –
bloody men in grey suits, and a few women, being paid sickening sums of
money to talk about talks about talks – to deal with the mass abandonment of
    dogs and cats in Europe.
Ill be running another letter-writing campaign in
the Autumn and contacting people to see if we can organise a mass protest in
various European countries on the same day – to raise publicity about it and try
and shame the Eurocrats into forcing governments to take action sooner. If
youve any ideas, they will be welcome.
Personally Id castrate all horse, dog and cat
breeders, and chop off one of their hands – they might think twice about adding
    to the stray animal problem.
Thanks for all your caring and what you do for the
    innocents, whatever the breed.

Horrible! True, it doesn’t matter the breed…OR THE ANIMAL for that matter. The humans(non vegans) mistreating, using, abusing other sentient beings for our own pleasure(eating, wearing, entertainment) is so so so wrong!! They feel and suffer the same pain as we humans do! When are people going to stop and realize!!??

Absolutely totally agree with you – all abuse of
animals for whatever purpose is just so sickening….I get so many emails in
about animal abuse around the world, but I am just one person, and I have to
channel my energies on – in my case – the galgos and podencos. I hope you
support the campaigns that I run on Galgo News, there will be one coming up in
October aimed at the Spanish government and the hunting and racing
    associations.
Thank you for caring, for commenting, and for
