Spot the Well!!

This weekend has been full of dreadful emails about the dogs in Spain. So I’m just going to do short posts and you can click on Continue to read more.

This is from Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo. Letitia, the Guardia Civil employee who also helps at the Villa del Rio shelter in Cordoba (owned by a Spanish galguero!!) was contacted by a hunter on 17 October.

‘Galgo DIES IN A WELL IN A TOWN NEAR TOLEDO

The beginning of the hunting season means new cases of animal abuse against the Galgos.

Last Sun., Oct. 17, the town of La Mata (Toledo) was witness to an unpleasant incident concerning Galgos. A Galgo was found drowned in a well five meters deep at a place called “Cerro del Palo.” This dog probably tried to stay afloat after being intentionally thrown in for the purpose of killing him.

Through the efforts of the BaasGalgo Association volunteers (an organization that has a dynamic work effort to protect this breed), and even together with the Guardia Civil police and firemen, it was impossible to save this Galgo. Members of the BaasGalgo team descended the well risking their own personal safety but were unable to save the dog. After a relevant examination, it was noted that this dog did not have a microchip.

Unfortunately, the hunting season coincides with the appearance of similar cases in which different methods are used for getting rid of this breed without the faintest idea for animal protection and ethics. Maybe the only positive aspect is that these cases, through media and dissemination, contributes to larger public awareness about the problem in order to preserve the heritage of this emblematic Galgo breed.’
