Polar’s Diary – checking up with the vet

Polar's perch 250 1 9 2013Pesky pup Polar is definitely making his mark in our home – in more ways than one! Here he is practising the Polar Perch – left cheek resting on a nearby chair! The dogs aren’t allowed on the chairs in our living rooms – they have their own chairs in the adjoining barn – so this is Polar’s statement of ‘I’m not actually sitting on the chair!’

He is into everything, including things he shouldn’t be into! His worst misdeed happened when we were out with friends for the evening.

Somewhere he found a carrier bag containing my smart brown jodhpur boots and decided to chew one! Now I’m not riding anymore, I had planned to wear them with smart trousers….and of course, when you shout at him, he cocks his beautiful head on one side to say ‘who me?!’

He’s growing nicely and, without his deformed leg, would have been a stunning dog. We took a trip back to see the vet again this week. In France, in order to change his microchip from being registered in Spain to registered in France, a vet has to complete a special form which is then sent off to their governing association. So whilst we were getting this done, Dr Verrin and I discussed the damaged leg. The knee joint is quite swollen now and the scar of the injury site is very visible. Arthritis has already set into the join but at the moment it is not causing pain.

Polar continues to hare around the courtyard playing tag with Bracken and Carmela with no after effects. He is on a daily dose of MSM and special natural dog feed to aid strong bones and muscles.

Dr Verrin and I discussed the options available if and when the joint causes Polar pain but we also agreed that each and every animal has a different threshold of pain and it could be that Polar has a high threshold. Let’s hope so.

This weekend is our 4th fun dog show fundraiser so next week I plan on taking Polar to start obedience classes at a local dog club. He needs to mix with dogs other than ours and meet strangers. I’ll let you know how he gets on. Should be great fun!

Too cute! Our 4 dogs are allowed anywhere they want to go, except the kitchen as it is hard to cook and move about with 4 small dogs underfoot!
