Scooby – saving souls in Spain

Scooby Valladolid galgos 250 22 1 2014This week Scooby added 3 more galgos to the hundreds they have waiting for forever homes. Here’s what Cobie writes.

‘Cobie Steketee

So, at last all the surviving dogs from the shit hole perrera from Mairena have been taken out of that hell. From what I understand it was a big chaos, somebody opened doors from cages and with an open gate at that time, some 30 dogs escaped, it seems that still some galgos are running free there in the neighbourhood.

Miraculously the protectoras there now had place to take dogs and there appeared suddenly a lot of foster families. Where were all these rescuers all these years when it was known that the dogs were living there in a hell, that they sacrificed many thousands of innocent animals for no reason other than by doing so, there was room for other dogs which also were sacrificed?

Why did nobody step in to save dogs all these years ago? What television, radio, papers and magazines can mean to people is very clear now. Well, let´s keep positive and hope that never NEVER again the doors here will be opened for new dogs to enter, because than it starts all over again…! And there are many more centers in Spain just as bad as this one, now is the time to also act against these killing stations from hell!

This afternoon there was no television camera, no radio, no newspaper- or magazine journalist when Scooby took 3 galgos from the provincial perrera from Valladolid to avoid that they were going to be sacrified in a few days. They have no microchip and officialy, then they have no owner and belong to nobody, so why feed them for 21 days? That only costs money and serves for nothing!

To Scooby they mean a lot! Three innocent beings who did not ask for being put in this world, being treated the way they were treated or killed just because their owner is a person with no responsibility feeling at all! For Scooby they are three jewels who deserve a better life than they´ve had until now!

They are safe now in the Scooby residencia, all three super skinny with hunger like a horse, but safe and they will feel better every day a little bit more and when they are healthy and strong again, we will find good homes for them where they can live their lives happy and loved. And we don´t need the tv, radio or newspaper to keep on doing so!!’

What a shame that they opened the cages while the main door was open, as some of the rescues probably would have taken these galgos rather than them being abandoned to their fate. I hope that a rescue picks them up rather than them being left to starve, running about terrified or getting knocked down by a car. It is really clear that the media is a powerful tool. I am hoping that this light can be shone on all the other kill shelters, not just Mairena and that the dogs stop being treated like this. Thank you Scooby for saving these three galgos from Valladolid. I had a look on Scooby website at the other recently saved galgos, saved from the hell of a kill shelter. There is a beautiful older boy galgo there with a grey face, a lot of his hair had come out, poor old lad but he was getting beautifully looked after by Scooby. I will be donating to Scooby, just brilliant what they do.

I really agree with everything you have to say…but the ONLY way things will ever change in Spain is with social awareness and a change in legislation. This will need coverage and ‘sensationalism’ like we saw in Sevilla from the media.
Without change we will all just get older and die doing the same thing year in year out.
I know that sounds negative, but where is the change in attitude in Spain towards animals? Will the EU commission EVER intervene…I doubt it very much…it has to come from within.

there are thousands of young Spanish who are now involved in helping the abandoned dogs, cats, horses – and some associations find the time to go into schools and youth clubs to educate the younger generations that animal cruelty is not acceptable. Unfortunately there are many wealthy Spanish whose outlook will not change and who are in places of power. It’s very frustrating but we have to keep plugging away and keep trying.
    Thanks for caring and commenting.
