Rescuing from a Perrera – advice from Mo Swatek of Pro-Galgo International

Albacete perrera 400 2 May 2011 damitai2The debate about rescuing from a perrera when not living in Spain or the Canary Islands continues to rage.  Here are words of advice from Mo Swatek of Pro-Galgo International, who recently drove 250kms to a perrera to rescue podencos and galgos with a short kill date, only to find there was no kill date for the dogs!

RESCUING FROM PERRERAS
**********
As the emotional blackmail and the sharing without checking the real situation is getting worse and worse, here some Suggestions how to reserve dogs from perreras without being cheated, overcharged etc.

1.  Do not work with private people if money is involved.  Pay only to animal welfare associations or directly to the PERRERA.

2. Always insist in the name and exact location of the place.

3. Do not send dogs in residencia or foster care without full details of the person or residence Incl address, phone, legal permits etc. Be aware that many people make a living with private illegal fostering and you risk your dog’s being decommissed if there are no permits for dog boarding for more than 2 dogs. Most villages do not permit more than 5 dogs or pets in general per household!

4. If it’s a ‘private residence or boarding’ ask for pictures and how the dogs are going to be kept BEFORE sending any dogs there. Some of these private residencias are just a fenced area with a stable where dogs are held without any socialising etc and not even people living nearby..

5. Make sure that you have somebody of your confidence who can go to see the animals in the residence, check on health state etc.

6. Ask for a contract Incl. Chip number and other details of the animal , to make sure you will have control over the dog.

7. If transport needed from perrera to residencia, ask for legalised pettransporters , it’s for the security of the animal and if the police detects illegal transports, the animals might be decommissioned.

8. Make sure you see the receipt for the payments to the PERRERA for passport, vaccines etc as some people charge more than the real costs at the PERRERA .

9. Before overreacting and doing ‘panic rescues’ check with the PERRERA if their is a REAL EUTHANASIA DATE and in several perreras you may leave the dog for no extra fee for some more days to be able to organise it in a legal and secure way.

10. Not all perreras are hell holes or extermination centres also not all shelters take good care of rescued animals. Be carefull and investigate, Google and experienced responsible rescue associationd can help you.

Thank you Mo for this informed advice. So much emotional blackmail used by some associations to release dogs from perreras and sometimes unnecessary heart break.
