  • Greyhound Racing in Jamaica? The Prime Minister says ‘No’

I’ve just received a letter from Mr Bruce Golding, Prime Minister of Jamaica, advising that ‘The Government has received no request or proposed for and is not considering the granting of permission for the introduction of greyhound racing’.

This is good news for the organisers of the campaign to prevent the introduction of greyhound racing on the island.

  • Join the Campaign – Ban Greyhound Racing in South Africa

I have today received the following appeal from South Africa. Please support them.

We are sitting with a crisis and we need help and/or advice. They are looking at legalising greyhound racing in South Africa, citing Black Economic Empowerment and job creation for the poor. Please read below.

    Regards,
    Nikki Botha
    South Africa

On 1 February 2009 on the front page of the Business Report of the Sunday Tribune newspaper there was an article publicising the legalisation of greyhound sport racing. The feeble excuse given for the legal introduction of this sport is job creation for a large number of individuals.

  • A Galgos Prayer – Stop The Annual Massacre – 50,000 Galgos per year

    Fran Passion Levriers 1207 250
Señor Galguero! Señor galguero, I sat waiting and waiting today as time passed and my hunger grew. You never came, even though we who are here fear your footsteps. You may just bring us those crumbs of bread which we all have to fight for, even though we wish there was enough for us all.

It’s cold in here tonight and the floor is damp, I cannot sit and I cannot lie down but for you”my master” I will wait in the cold and feel the hunger. When I saw you last you came and took my mother, I still await her return but she just has not come back. I don’t understand Señor Galguero, for I am a good Galgo and I try my hardest.

  • STOP greyhound racing in Jamaica – Send This Letter

I’ve just received information from Maureen Sheridan at The Animal House in Jamaica that the plans to introduce greyhound racing in Jamaica are moving forward. She’s appealing for as many people as possible to send a protest letter to send to the Prime Minister and the Editor of the Jamaica Observer, which recently carried an anti-greyhound racing article.

There are 2 draft letters here, which can also be used for emails. Please keep your correspondence polite and include your name and address.

Draft letter follows, to copy and send.

  • Diseases of the Galgo – Participate in a Health Survey before End of January

I have received the following information from Scooby Medina. I hope as many galgo owners as possible will participate. I am particularly interested because of the problem my own galga Karmel is suffering with this terrible disease Pemphigus Foliaceous.

    Dear Galgo Owner,

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine would like your participation in a survey to identify the frequency of health-related conditions in Galgos. The results from the survey will help us to better understand which diseases are most common in Galgos and will serve as a baseline to help us conduct clinical research to improve the health of Galgo.

  • Urgent Appeal from Levriers en Danger – 500 euros and 10 cubic metre van

Levriers en Danger logo edit 2
Levriers en Danger have made an urgent appeal. This is what they say.

‘One of the refuges with which we work has asked us to come to their aid to make an urgent rescue of 100 galgos which were found in a critical state. The person who owned them has been banned by a judge from keeping animals. The refuge has taken them and asked us to take them. We naturally have to liaise as soon as possible with the director of the refuge where the dogs have been placed.

We need 500 euros to pay for the transport of these galgos already in the refuge and to prepare them for adoption, but chiefly to provide food.

Please send donations, however small, by cheque payable to Levriers en Danger and mention the ‘rescue of 100 galgos’, to

    LEVRIERS EN DANGER
    Le moulin
    42540 Sainte Colombe sur Gand

Also, if anyone has a lorry of 10 cubic metres, please help.

Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Socks for Galgos? Not as Daft as it Sounds!

    Galgo-socks
Maria Daines, the singer/songwriter who performs concerts to raise funds for animal charities, told me her Mum is knitting socks for galgos! So I asked her for the story. Here’s what Maria wrote.

‘An artist from UK has found a novel way to help Galgos keep warm this winter. Mary Coe from Cambridgeshire sent some knitted socks to her friend Jeanet in The Netherlands thinking Jeanet could wear them in the snow.
